Week 6 Reflections

MondayToday we began by working with the letter Rr. The first thing students did was
write the letter correctly, both lower and upper case. Next, they isolated the Rr
pictures and wrote the letter on the line if it began with an R. They still expect this
routine every morning, and its nice because they come in, put their things away,
and get straight to work. Its a lot less chaotic than just having everyone scrambling
around and talking as they please.
We followed with an alphabetizing activity. This was something they had
trouble with last week, so I figured some extra time would be needed today, but
that wasnt the case at all. They got it much better today, they already had a page
finished in about 5 minutes after some review of it. We then discussed each others
name and where it fell on the alphabet. Ive learned that this is a hard concept for
this age to learn.
For math we worked on counting to 120. The first thing we did was take turns
filling out a 100s chart. I displayed it on the elmo and they would raise their hand
to come write the next line. Next, they did a cut and paste where they would glue
and next number in sequence. Once they finished they glued them into their
journal. To finish up the day we did social studies with our own students. We
discussed community rules and laws. We also talked about different road signs and
too much surprise, they knew almost as many road signs as I did! We then colored
and glued a community picture into our social studies journal.

TuesdayWe began today with the letter Jj. Students wrote the letter numerous times
on their own as they settled into the room. Along with Jj, we also did the letter W.
After writing both numerous times, we moved on to the picture worksheet. If it
began with a W or a J they wrote the letter on the line. Having stuff like this that
they know is coming makes transitions so much easier. Next, we worked with white
boards and sight words. I would tell the students the word and we would sound it
out as a class. Once they sounded it out, we agreed that it was correct and then
they spelled it on their white boards. We wrote all five words and then used them in
a sentence.
For math we worked with numbers up to 120. We began by counting as a
class with some slight review and then we moved onto the lesson. We began with a
number and worked on counting forward 4 numbers. I would tell them where to
start, like 54, and they would write, 54, 55, 56, 57 and 58. We did this for a while
and then moved onto number grids. They got numbers 0-120 and each line had 2 or
3 missing numbers, they would fill in the missing numbers. Last, we played a dice
game. The students got into partners and each had a number grid, die, and two
playing pieces. They would take turns rolling the die and whatever number they
landed on they had to move. Whichever person got past 120 first won the game.
Instead of social studies, today I went into the science classroom. We
discussed condensation, precipitation, and other words dealing with the weather.
After discussion, we looked at pictures of different types of clouds, and talked about
what each meant. Once we were familiar with the different types, we then went
outside and walked around the school to observe the clouds. When we found a
cloud that resembled what we discussed inside, we pointed it out and let everyone
know.

WednesdayTo begin the day we worked on sequencing letters of the alphabet. We

reviewed a little from yesterday and then they did a workbook sheet on their own.
We then worked with rhyming words and sight words. The group I had used
magnetic letters and put them on their boards when I told them what word to build.
They would then change one or two letters and make a new rhyming word. The
other group worked with sight words; they would color the sight word while doing a
little activity.
Then, because of pictures this morning, our morning routine was carried back
a few hours. We watched a video on the letter H, and then they practiced writing
the letter. While they wrote their letters I pulled kids to the side and assessed them
on numbers. They had 3 minutes to tell me as many numbers as they could from a
sheet of paper I had.
For math, we worked on sequencing again, with some review from earlier in
the week. They filled in missing numbers from 0-120 and when they finished they
would read aloud to us. To end the day I went to the science classroom again. We
did the same activity as the class yesterday.
