1. INTRODUCTION
The present checklist is intended to set all steps you should follow before, during and after your participation in the
UNITN-SISSA program.
The MCS portal always offers updated information about the UNITN-SISSA program. Please check regularly the UNITNSISSA program webpage by clicking on the following link:

2. DEADLINES
Upon arrival

You need to confirm your acceptance of the UNITN-SISSA fellowship sending an email to mcs@unitn.it within
1 week after receiving the offer notification.

For non-EU students: Please follow the instructions of the UNITN Welcome Office regarding the visa
application procedure, the evaluation of your economic condition and the application for the Opera
Universitaria scholarship & accommodation. The Welcome Office will inform you as well regarding the MCS
Enrollment Day for International Students (usually mid-September).

For EU students: Please apply for the Opera Universitaria scholarship and/or accommodation according to
the deadlines set by the Opera Universitaria Call (usually published in June):

published in August):

Opera Universitaria scholarship vs. UNITN-SISSA scholarship

During the 1 st academic year you cannot benefit from both the UNITN-SISSA scholarship and the Opera
Universitaria scholarship at the same time. You will have to choose between them by the end of October, as
soon as the Opera Universitaria ranking list is published.
Accepting the Opera Univeristaria scholarship does not mean that you withdraw from the UNITN-SISSA
Program; it only implies that you renounce to the UNITN-SISSA scholarship. Here follows some information
that may help you decide in case you are entitled to receive the Opera Universitaria scholarship:
The UNITN-SISSA scholarship for the 1st academic year amounts to 2.500 euros, unconsidered your
financial situation.
The amount of the Opera Universitaria scholarship depends on your financial situation. The max.
amount of the scholarship is 2.500 euros.
The tuition fee is calculated according to your financial situation and depends on your income
bracket (max. 6.000 euros per year for non-EU students or max. 2.827 euros per year for EU
students). Opera Universitaria scholarships holders are fee waived.
In the 2 nd year you will be able to re-apply for the Opera Universitaria scholarship, given that you
meet the academic requirements specified in the Call (at least 45 ECTS registered at the beginning of
August).
SISSA provides a grant of maximum 500 euros/month for the period spent in Trieste.
In both cases, as a participant in the UNITN-SISSA Program, you will have right to free accommodation in
Trento during the 1st year (in one of the Opera Universitaria residences) and a contribution to your
accommodation expenses in Trieste during the 2 nd year (maximum 250 euros/month after providing a copy of
the official lodging contract).

While at UNITN

If you dont meet the requirements for the Opera Universitaria scholarship, please notify the MCS secretari a t
by 30 th September. You will be required to fill in some forms in order to receive the UNITN-SISSA scholarship.

In all other cases please notify the MCS secretariat by 31st October regarding your decision about the Opera
Universitaria scholarship. If you dont accept it, you will be required to fill in some forms in order to receive to
UNITN-SISSA scholarship. The MCS Secretariat stays at your disposal to give you further advice.
A meeting for the presentation of the joint program will be held at the beginning of October. The meeting is
an opportunity to ask questions and receive clarifications regarding both the organizational and academic
aspects of the Program.
Please fill in your study plan by the deadlines communicated by the MCS secretariat (usually the end of
November). Please find some more details below.
A visit at SISSA takes place in June. Students have the opportunity to visit the labs, listen to PhD

presentations, meet the faculty etc. UNITN covers your travel expenses and your subsistence costs.

Study Plan

In order to complete the UNITN-SISSA program you have to earn 132 ECTS over 2 academic years.
We recommend you to complete all the mandatory courses (51 ECTS) and elective courses (12 ECTS) at
UNITN during the 1 st academic year.
You have the opportunity to attend the free choice courses (12 ECTS) either at UNITN or at SISSA in addition
to the supplementary courses (12 ECTS) during the 2 nd academic year.
This second option has been proven to be the best solution in the past editions of the program (the workload
is well distributed over 2 academic years and there are no difficulties to have recognized the free choice
courses from UNITN).

By 30th September you will have to satisfy the following conditions for being admitted to the 2 nd year of the
UNITN-SISSA program: at least 45 ECTS with a GPA of at least 27/30, and no marks lower than 24/30. If you
fail to meet these criteria, you will be excluded from the program. However, all the exams and credits already
acquired will be acknowledged towards the completion of the Curriculum to obtain the Masters degree in
Cognitive Science from UNITN.

Its mandatory to complete your internship (15 ECTS) and Masters thesis (30 ECTS) at SISSA during the 2 nd
academic year.

Courses at SISSA

While at SISSA

Courses at SISSA begin in November. However, you are required to arrive at SISSA at the beginning of
October for the welcome and check-in activities.

Please ask for an extension of your Opera Universitaria housing contract if you need to stay in Trento until
the end of September (the costs are covered by UNITN).

The SISSA Secretariat will get in contact with you by email at the beginning of September. Please provide the
required information by the given deadline.

The SISSA campus is located in Opicina (Trieste), in Via Bonomea 265. It can easily be reached via public
transportation, which connects the campus to downtown Trieste (at 4 km only). For more information please

SISSA has a housing service which gives you all kind of support in order to find an accommodation in Tr i es te,
including language assistance if you do not speak Italian. For more details please check the following link:

In order to receive a contribution to the accommodation expenses, you are required to hand in a copy of your
housing contract to the SISSA Secretariat. To receive the monthly reimbursement, please hand in the rent
payment receipt in the first half of each month to the SISSA Secretariat.

On the ground floor in the main building on the SISSA campus, bar and canteen service is available.

In order to access laboratories at SISSA, you are required to undergo some health surveillance measures,
including a medical visit. For more information please see here:

Both forms preliminary form and completion certificate must be submitted to the SISSA Secretariat resp.
before starting and after completing your internship at SISSA.

Once you have completed all courses at SISSA, please download the transcript of records self-certification
form at the following link:

Please fill it out with the performed activities and submit the undersigned form to the SISSA Secretariat.

Completing the Program

Please choose a first supervisor at UNITN and a second supervisor at SISSA for your Masters thesis.

Please communicate the expected graduation date to both the MCS and SISSA Secretariats at least two
months in advance.

A joint degree session for UNITN-SISSA students takes place in Trieste usually in October.

If you need less/more time to complete your Masters thesis, you can take part in a previous/later degree
session in Trento.

You will obtain the official Italian degree Laurea Magistrale in Cognitive Science - Scienze Cognitive (c l a s se
LM-55 Scienze Cognitive) from UNITN and the Diploma (Magister) in Cognitive Science from SISSA.

Withdrawal from the Program

In case of withdrawal from the SISSA-UNITN Program you must notify as soon as possible the administrative
offices at UNITN (mcs@unitn.it) and SISSA (tuniz@sissa.it).

You will have to pay back the full amount of the economic benefits awarded, including the lodging expenses.
The payment can be made in two or more installments in agreement with the respective administrative
offices.

The refund of the economic benefits is not due in case of justified reasons for the withdrawal (like illness,
etc.). The UNITN-SISSA Program Board will evaluate your request on the basis of supporting documents.

All the exams and credits already acquired will be acknowledged towards the completion of the Curriculum
to obtain the Masters degree in Cognitive Science from UNITN.
