Brexit: Bye-bye Britain!

Britains vote to leave the EU which implies opting out of common market and being entirely
independent in framing its immigration laws and fiscal policy is nothing short of a huge political
and economic earthquake but the impact on India is expected to be net positive

Leave camp
Brexit supporters claim that as Britain has voted to leave
the EU, it will no longer have to contribute billions of
pounds a year towards the European Unions budget.
During the campaign Eurosceptics slammed a
Confederation of British Industry report that claimed that
Brexit would cause a 100billion shock to the UK
economy. The government was also accused of doom and
gloom after predicting that a Brexit would cost
households 4,300 a year by 3030, leaving Britain worse
off for decades.

The people of Britain voted for a British exit, or Brexit,

from the European Union (EU) in a historic referendum on
June 23. Leave won by 52% to 48%. The referendum
turnout was 71.8%, with more than 30 million people
voting. It was the highest turnout in a UK-wide vote since
the 1992 general election.
The outcome has prompted jubilant celebrations among
Eurosceptics around Europe and sent shockwaves through
the global economy. After the result, the pound fell to its
lowest level since 1985 and Prime Minister David
Cameron, who wanted Britain to stay in the EU, resigned
on June 24. The next Prime Minister, who will be in place
by September 9, will decide when to tell the EU that Britain
wants to go using Article 50.
The use of Article 50 starts the timer on two years of exit
talks before the UK is expelled from the political bloc.
England voted strongly for Brexit, by 53.4% to 46.6%, as
did Wales, with Leave getting 52.5% of the vote and
Remain 47.5%. Scotland and Northern Ireland both backed
staying in the EU. Scotland backed Remain by 62% to
38%, while 55.8% in Northern Ireland voted Remain and
44.2% Leave. England, Scotland, Wales and Northern
Ireland are the four constituents of United Kingdom while
Ireland is an independent nation which is a member of the
EU.
The pound on June 24 fell to its lowest level since 1985
and emergency steps are now being taken to calm the
economic turmoil. Britain has lost its AAA credit rating.

Immigration was a big issue for anti-EU campaigners.

Eurosceptics say Brexit will allow Britain to take back
control of its borders in order to curb immigration and
increase security. Britain will no longer have to accept free
movement of people from Europe, which Brexiteers say
puts pressure on public services such as the National
Health Service (NHS) and schools.
One of the main principles of EU membership is free
movement, which means you dont need to get a visa to
go and live in another EU country. The Leave campaign
also objected to the idea of ever closer union and what
they see as moves towards the creation of a United States
of Europe.
Brexit campaigners believe that British voters have taken a
once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to restore Britains
sovereignty. Eurosceptics see EU institutions as inherently
undemocratic and argue that laws that affect the UK should
not be decided by bureaucrats in Brussels (the HQ of EU).
There is ongoing uncertainty over what will happen when
Britain leaves the EU because it has to make new trade
agreements with the rest of the world but Brexit supporters
argue that EU countries have every incentive keep trading
with the UK, which is a large importer of goods and
services.
Why did Britons choose the unknown future despite stark
warnings from their own government, world leaders and
economists that a Brexit would be extremely risky?
Euroscepticism has been a strong sentiment among
Britons. But over the past few years, nationalist sentiment

has grown stronger in the U.K. Ordinary Britons, hit hard
by the economic crisis, feel betrayed by their political
leadership. The Conservative governments austerity
policies have further alienated these sections.

Remain camp
The Remain campaign believed that Brexit will hit the
British economy, which relies on the free movement of EU
migrant workers such as health professionals. Some
Europhiles have also said that Brexit will compromise the
UKs ability to fight cross-border crime and terrorism.
Those campaigning for Britain to stay in the EU said it gets
a big boost from membership - it makes selling things to
other EU countries easier and, they argued, the flow of
immigrants, most of whom are young and keen to work,
fuels economic growth and helps pay for public services.
Europhiles argue that the UK outside EU will now wield
less power on the international stage because it will not be
in the room when key decisions are made. There are also
fears that British workers, expats and travellers will lose
key rights currently enshrined under EU law.
Europhiles worry that foreign companies will be less likely
to invest in UK and could relocate their headquarters if
Britain loses access to the EUs single market which looks
most likely.
Corporates - with a few exceptions - tended to be in favour
of Britain staying in the EU because it makes it easier for
them to move money, people and products around the
world.

About European Union

The European Union - often known as the EU - is an
economic and political partnership involving 28 European
countries. It began after World War Two to foster
economic co-operation, with the idea that countries which
trade together are more likely to avoid going to war with
each other. No nation state has ever left the EU and Britain
will be the first one to do so. It has since grown to become
a single market allowing goods and people to move
around, basically as if the member states were one country.
The EU has its own currency, the euro, which is used by
19 of the 28 member countries, its own parliament and it
now sets rules in a wide range of areas - including on the

environment, transport, consumer rights and even things

such as mobile phone charges.

Impact on India
Human Resources
With Britain cutting off ties with the EU, it will be
desperate to find new trading partners and a source of
capital and labour. It will still need a steady inflow of
talented labour, and India fits the bill perfectly due to its
English-speaking population. With migration from
mainland Europe drying up, Britain would be able to
accommodate migration from other countries, which will
suit Indias interests.
Further, Britain is one of the most important destinations
for Indians who want to study abroad. Presently, British
universities are forced to offer subsidized rates for citizens
of the EU. With Brexit, however, the universities will no
longer be obliged to provide scholarships to EU citizens,
which will free up funds for students from other countries.
Many more Indian students may be able to get scholarships
for studying in the UK.

Indian FDI in UK
India is presently the second biggest source of FDI for
Britain. One of the main reasons for this is the historic and
cultural ties with the UK that India shares along with the
fact that the UK proved to be a gateway into the rest of
Europe. Indian companies that would set up their factories
in the UK could sell their products to the rest of Europe
under the European free market system. However, after
Brexit, it will not be as attractive a destination for Indian
FDI as before. Having said that, Britain would not want to
lose out on capital coming in from India. Thus, one can
expect Britain to try extra hard to woo Indian companies to
invest there by providing much bigger incentives in terms
of tax breaks, lesser regulation and other financial
incentives.

Trade & investments

India loses its gateway to Europe with Britains exit from
EU. This might force India to forge ties with other
countries within the EU. Netherlands is Indias top FDI
destination as of now. A Brexit could force India to build
trading partnership with other EU nations in order to access
the large EU market. This would be a good result in the
long run.

Faces
Anil Kumble: New turn

Unlike his contemporaries, Kumble was not a big turner of the ball, rather relied much on pace
and accuracy. His challenge in his new assignment is to make India capable of winning overseas

Former India skipper Anil Kumble (45) was appointed as

the head coach of the countrys cricket team for next one
year by the BCCI on June
23. The selectors have
shown faith in his ability
even though Kumble doesnt
have any previous coaching
experience at international
or first-class level.
In a glorious international
career spanning over 18
years, Kumble played 132
Tests taking 619 wickets at an average of 29.65. He
remains the third-highest wicket takeronly behind
Muttiah Muralitharan and Shane Warne. He also made
2506 runs at an average of 17.77 with five fifties and a
hundred and a top score of 110 not-out.
Kumble made his test debut against England in August
1990. His last test appearance was against Australia in
October 2008.
In 1999 while playing against Pakistan in Delhi, Kumble
dismissed all the ten batsmen in a Test match innings (10
for 74) becoming only the second player to achieve this
feat; the other player being Jim Laker of England. He is
also remembered for his tenacity in bowling even when
injured, especially after an incident in a match against West
Indies in 2002 where, despite having his broken jaw being
heavily taped, he came back and took the wicket of Brian
Lara.
Kumble led India in 14 Test matches after being appointed
as captain in November 2007. He succeeded Rahul Dravid,
winning three, losing five and drawing the remaining six.
He began his tenure with a 1-0 home series win over
Pakistan.
Besides being Indias highest wicket-taker in Tests and
third overall, Kumble had also taken 337 wickets in his 271
one-day internationals. He also made 938 runs at an
average of 10.54. In the 1996 ODI World Cup won by Sri
Lanka, Kumble was the most successful bowler capturing
15 wickets at an average of 18.73 in seven matches.
www.endeavorcareers.com

Kumble is a right-arm leg spinner with an unorthodox

style, most famous for his flipper. He started his career as
a fast bowler, which gave him a
useful faster delivery. He relied more
on accuracy, variations and bounce
rather than spinning the ball.
According to Cricinfo, Kumble has
been an unusual spinner has been
said many times before. It has also
been said, a trifle unfairly, that he is
a unidimensional bowler. Palpably,
he has lacked the turn of Warne and
Murali, but his variety has been
subtler, far more apparent to batsmen than to viewers. He
has shown that not only turn and flight that can deceive the
batsman but also the changes of length and pace. He has
been a cultured practitioner of his unique craft and a master
of nuances.
Kumble was awarded the Padma Shri, Indias fourth
highest civilian honour in 2005. After his retirement in
2008, took up administrative roles as he was elected as
president of the Karnataka State Cricket Association in
November 2010. He served as chairman of the National
Cricket Academy in Bangalore and also headed the BCCIs
technical committee. In October 2012, Kumble was
appointed the chairman of International Cricket Council
(ICC)s cricket committee.
Between 2012 and 2015, Kumble held positions as a chief
mentor for the teams Royal Challengers Bangalore and
Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League. In February
2015, he became the fourth Indian cricketer after Sunil
Gavaskar, Kapil Dev and Bishan Singh Bedi to be inducted
into ICC Hall of Fame.
The challenge for Kumble will be to make the team win
matches abroad. India havent won a Test match outside
the subcontinent for the last five years. They, in fact, lost
15. Limited-overs glory, too, has remained elusive since
the 2013 Champions Trophy. Young cricketers made very
little noise, forcing the selectors to dust off Ashish Nehra
and Yuvraj Singh before the World T20. The one-year
contract suggests the cricket board wants Kumble to serve
an apprenticeship period.

Business Biography
Alvin Toffler: The Futurist

Toffler rightly predicted that a knowledge-based economy would eclipse the post-industrial age,
shifting focus from manufacturing and labour to information processing and knowledge

Alvin Toffler, the U.S. author and

visionary known for several world
best-sellers, including Future
Shock and The Third Wave, died
in Los Angeles aged 87 on June 27.

as the society after agrarian

revolution that replaced the first
hunter-gatherer cultures.

Tofflers groundbreaking book

Future Shock, in which he
examined social change, as well as
several other books he co-authored
with his wife Heidi, made him one
of the most respected futurists of
the modern era, with world leaders and moguls seeking his
advice.
Son of Jewish immigrants from Poland, Toffler graduated
in English major from New York University in 1950 where
he met his future wife, Adelaide Elizabeth Farrell
(nicknamed Heidi). They married the same year.
Seeking experiences to write about, Alvin and Heidi
Toffler spent the next five years as blue collar workers on
assembly lines while studying industrial mass production
in their daily work. His hands-on practical labor experience
helped Alvin Toffler land a position at a trade unionbacked newspaper where he worked for three years. The
couple returned to New York City in 1959 when Fortune
magazine invited Alvin to become its labor columnist, later
having him write about business and management. After
leaving Fortune magazine in 1962, Toffler began a
freelance career, writing articles for scholarly journals and
magazines.
In the mid-1960s, the couple began five years of research
on what would become Future Shock, published in 1970.
It has sold over 6 million copies worldwide. Toffler coined
the term future shock to refer to what happens to a
society when change happens too fast, which results in
social confusion and normal decision-making processes
breaking down.
He continued the theme in The Third Wave in 1980 in
which the futurist describes three types of societies, based
on the concept of waves each wave pushes the older
societies and cultures aside. He describes the First Wave

www.endeavorcareers.com

The Second Wave is the society

during the Industrial Revolution (late
17th century through the mid-20th
century). That period saw the
increase of urban industrial
populations which had undermined
the traditional nuclear family, and
initiated a factory-like education
system, and the growth of the corporation. While he
describes the first and second waves as the agricultural and
industrial revolutions, the third wave, a phrase he coined,
represents the current information, computer-based
revolution. The eclipsing of manufacturing by knowledge
and information-processing as the primary economic
activity is the hallmark of the third wave. He correctly
forecast the spread of the Internet and email, interactive
media, cable television, cloning, and other digital
advancements.
He claimed that one of the side effects of the digital age has
been information overload, another term he coined. In
1990 he wrote Powershift, also with the help of his wife,
Heidi.
In 1996, with American business consultant Tom Johnson,
the Toffler couple co-founded Toffler Associates, an
advisory firm designed to implement many of the ideas
they had written on. The firm worked with businesses,
NGOs, and governments in countries across the world.
Toffler is also credited with coining the term adhocracy
that refers to the tendency in an organisation to progress on
the basis of temporary, ad hoc groups, such as a task force
brought together to deal with a particular project only.
In the age of Amazon and the proliferation of online
marketplaces, Tofflers thoughts on consumerism as a
global trend ring true. People of the future may suffer not
from an absence of choice but from a paralysing surfeit of
it. They may turn out to be victims of that peculiarly superindustrial dilemma: overchoice.

Germany and Shaheen II in Saudi Arabia, both Cray XC40
systems, are ninth and tenth.
The latest list marks the first time since the inception of the
TOP500 that the US is not home to the largest number of
systems. With a surge in industrial and research
installations registered over the last few years, China leads
with 167 systems and the US is second with 165. China
also leads the performance category.

concerts: Using iPhones to record at live shows might

become a thing of the past as Apple has won a US patent
for a technology that can force iPhones into disabling
video-recording mode at concert venues. The system uses
infrared signals to send messages to your phone to tell it to
shut down video recording. Apples patent illustration
showed a phone at a concert with the words recording
disabled on screen. An infrared emitter can be located in
areas where picture or video capture is prohibited, and the
emitter can generate infrared signals with encoded data
that includes commands to disable the recording functions
of devices, the patent said. An electronic device can then
receive the infrared signals and temporarily disable the
devices recording function based on the command, it
added. The California-based US tech firm was awarded the
patent in June amid growing concerns that live-recording
by hundreds of camera phones spoils the experience of
attending a music concert live. The development comes as
musicians and actors regularly complain about the growing
use of mobile phones and selfie sticks at live performances,
which allow fans to immediately share content.

Dissenting Diagnosis
Complaints about the state of medical care are increasing
in todays India; whether its

or
expensive, sometimes even
harmful, medication. But
while
the
unease
is
widespread, few outside the
profession understand the
extent to which the medical
system is being distorted. Dr
Arun Gadre and Dr Abhay
Shukla
have
gathered
evidence from seventy-eight
practising doctors, in both
the private and public
medical sectors, to expose
the ways in which vulnerable patients are exploited by a
system that promotes unscrupulous medical practices.
At a time when the medical sector is growing rapidly,
especially in urban areas, with the proliferation of multispecialty hospitals and the adoption of ever-more
sophisticated technologies, rational and ethical medical
care is becoming increasingly rare. Honest doctors feel
under siege, professional bodies meant to regulate the
medical sector fail to do so, and the influence of the
powerful pharmaceutical industry becomes even more
pervasive.
Drawing on the frank and courageous statements of these
seventy-eight doctors dismayed at the state of their
profession, Dissenting Diagnosis lays bare the corruption
afflicting the medical sector in India and sets out solutions
for a healthier future.
Dr Arun Gadre is a gynaecologist. He practised in a
drought-prone area of rural Maharashtra for twenty years.
With the support of his anaesthetist wife, Dr Jyoti Gadre,
he ran a small hospital on a private basis, witnessing firsthand the degeneration of the once noble medical
profession. Unable to stem the rot and fatigued by
practising in a resource-poor set-up with rising patient
expectations, he left private practice to work as a
coordinator of a Pune-based NGO, SATHI, which
specializes in policy advocacy related to health care in
India. Dr Gadre is the author of seventeen books in

Shoe Dog
Nike was not always as big of a name in shoes as it is today.
Nike was a rather small business at the start and it was all
run by Phil Knight, the man who
changed the shoe industry
forever. In 1962, fresh out of
business school, Phil Knight
borrowed $50 from his father and
created a company with a simple
mission: import high-quality,
low-cost athletic shoes from
Japan. Selling the shoes from the
boot of his Plymouth, Knight
grossed $8000 in his first year.
Today, Nikes annual sales top
$30 billion. The swoosh has become a revolutionary, globe
spanning icon, one of the most ubiquitous and recognisable
symbols in the world today. One of the worlds most
influential business executives, Knight is the founder of
NIKE, Inc. He served as CEO of the company from 1964
to 2004 and continues to this day as Board Chairman.
But Knight, the man behind the swoosh, has always
remained a mystery. Now, for the first time, he tells his
story. Candid, humble, wry and gutsy, he begins with his
crossroads moment when at 24 he decided to start his own
business. He details the many risks and daunting setbacks
that stood between him and his dream along with his early
triumphs. Above all, he recalls how his first band of
partners and employees soon became a tightknit band of
brothers. Together, harnessing the transcendent power of a
shared mission and a deep belief in the spirit of sport, they
built a brand that changed everything.
A memoir rich with insight, humour and hard-won
wisdom, this book is also studded with lessons about

Group Discussion
Trade Unions in IT Companies
FOR

AGAINST

The Tamil Nadu government recently ruled that IT

employees are also free to form trade unions and redress
their grievances through evoking the provisions of the
Industrial Disputes Act 1947. This should be no cause for
surprise. It only reiterates the fundamental right of an
Indian citizen (under Article 19) to form associations or
unions. To view the statement as undermining the basis of
the Indian IT sectors global success, predicated on its
efficient and low-cost labour force, would be going too far.
Trade unions must be allowed to function as equal partners
in the production of goods and process, and as agencies for
collective bargaining and expression of dissent. To
suppress the second is to invite an exaggerated outburst, as
the auto sector has learnt the hard way in Gurgaon.

If Indian industry in general baulks at the thought of

unions, the reasons are not far to seek. Trade unions, often
backed by political forces pursuing their own agendas,
have at times taken the law into their hands. The textile
workers strike in Mumbai three decades ago degenerated
into mayhem, leading to the end of the era of integrated
mills and the technology benefits associated with it. Our
textiles industry lost out on global standards, leaving
workers, pushed into the unorganised sector, far worse off.
A saga of strikes and equally retaliatory lockouts in West
Bengal led to the decline of Kolkata as an industrial centre.
All India Bank Employees Association (AIBEA) is a
famous employee union routinely which paralyses public
sector banking operations for the rights and welfare of its
hundreds of thousands of members.

A series of peremptory layoffs in the IT sector 2015 has set

off an undercurrent of resentment among employees.
Interestingly, many companies take a written undertaking
from their employees to refrain from trade union activities.

IT sector has been a success story because it did not face

the sort of government and political interference which
affected other sectors. Allowing trade unions will vitiate
work culture in the sector that has been unaffected so far.

In 2016, several IT and e-commerce companies faced flak

for deferring and backtracking employment offers to
hundreds of pass-outs from leading Indian colleges,
notably Flipkart. Employees in India cutting across a range
of industries have active labour unions to ensure their
welfare. But the IT sector has none.
During the initial decades, when business was galloping at
very high growth rates, the industry took everyone along.
The sector became synonymous with plush offices, foreign
postings, attractive perks and stock options. There are
stories of how even the support staff (such as drivers and
office boys) of companies like Infosys became wealthy,
having acquired company stock in the early days. And
instead of firing employees, companies spent millions of
dollars in training even unemployable staff to feed the
constant requirement for more hands. But, over the last
couple of years, the rise of automation and the disruption
caused by digitisation are forcing IT companies to lay off
workers on terms unfavourable to them.
Employees in the sector were not interested in joining the
trade unions in the early days, but are now realising that
they lack a collective voice to fight for their rights. The
need for trade unionism in the industry is stronger than
earlier. (Also see next page: Labour Movement)
www.endeavorcareers.com

Trade unions are required to prevent exploitation of

workers, ensure better working conditions and increase
collective bargaining for wages. But IT firms are leaders in
compensation and benefits. In addition, Indias IT firms do
make consistent efforts in keeping the workforce
employable. Large Indian IT firms spend enormous
amounts on training of their employees and conduct
continuous learning programmes.
Unlike several government-owned companies where trade
unions thrive, the IT sector is a performance-driven
workplace where accommodating non-performers is just
not possible. There are cases where people dont want to
relocate and the company has no choice to end up firing
some. Once trade unions enter the picture, companies will
lose the ability to act fast and will be hamstrung by
cumbersome labour laws on hire and fire.
Trade unions are useful when people want job security
and want to work for a single employer for 25-30 years. IT
is an industry where people move from company to
company, depending on who is offering offer better pay
and attrition is in double digits. So IT is not a sector where
the employer has the upper hand where every wave of
automation results in massive layoffs.

Ideas & Ideologies

Labour movement: Workers in union
The trade union movement marked workers organised struggle against exploitation and demand for better
wages & working conditions by the use of collective bargaining with employers

The labour movement was the principal force that

transformed misery and despair into hope and progress.
Out of its bold struggles, economic and social reform gave
birth to unemployment insurance, old age pensions,
government relief for the destitute, and above all new wage
levels that meant not mere survival, but a tolerable life. The
captains of industry did not lead this transformation; they
resisted it until they were overcome. This speech delivered
by American civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jr in
1965 acknowledges the vital contribution of the labour
movement in transforming the lives of ordinary working
people. His words are equally true of the efforts of other
leaders who had championed the cause of working people
over the preceding hundred years.
King focuses on one of the key facets of
the labour movement: trade unionism. In
this aspect, the movements aim is to win
improvements in matters such as pay and
working conditions by means of
collective action. But - as King also
indicates gains made in these areas
were typically won in the teeth of fierce
opposition from employers. The fight for
recognition of workers rights - most
importantly, the right to unionize - dominated the early
stages of the labour movement.

The Struggle for recognition

The labour movement remains a somewhat nebulous
concept, partly because it has always meant different things
to different people. From early on, the struggles of ordinary
working people acting collectively to improve their lot had
a strong, even romantic appeal to radicals and
revolutionaries. Communist ideologue Karl Marxs
analysis of history as class struggle presents the working
class (proletariat) as a united group capable of concerted
action against the capitalist class (bourgeoisie).
Organised labour union was a direct response to the new
and often harsh world forged in the furnace of industrial
capitalism. Collective bargaining, in which workers would
appoint representatives to negotiate pay and other terms of
employment, offered some defence against the exploitation
of labour that was endemic in a system of largely
unregulated industry and commerce. Predictably,
employers who felt that their own interests were threatened
www.endeavorcareers.com

by this new assertiveness fought back, either taking matters

into their own hands, or attempting (often successfully) to
put legal barriers in the path of labour activism. In most
countries, the most basic workers right - the right to
organize - remained a central issue throughout the 19th
century, and was only satisfactorily resolved in the 20th.

From plenty to hardship

The golden age of trade unionism, and of the labour
movement generally, was the first three decades after the
Second World War. The election of left-leaning, social
democratic parties in many countries marked the beginning
of unprecedented cooperation between government and
labour, as capitalism mitigated by
redistributive taxation and high social
spending brought a transformation in
welfare and living conditions. Massproduction
methods
became
ubiquitous, giving extra bargaining
power to large-scale general unions
and contributing to sustained economic
prosperity that brought higher wages,
better working conditions and all
manner of consumer goods to
generations of newly affluent workers.
The bubble burst as massive and irreversible changes
transformed the world order, economically and politically.
Most significantly, in the last quarter of the 20th century,
the forces of globalization brought mobility of capital and
labour that made socialist goals such as full employment
and cradle-to-grave welfare provision look unattainable. In
the so-called post-industrial age, the growing realization of
a global single market made the quest for international
competitiveness paramount.
As traditional heavy industries were squeezed by the
inexorable growth of the service sector, old-style trade
unionism was portrayed as rigid, archaic and out of touch.
In a world where the buzzword was flexibility and cheap
labour was readily available, unions found themselves
increasingly marginalized and fragmented; where they
were not frozen out completely, their bargaining power
was much reduced, and concerted and centralized action all
but impossible. Ideologically, too, the ground had shifted,
as businesses demanded deregulation and the free play of
market forces.
