Extended summary
Abstract
The characteristic wind velocity was calculated for the area of
Greece in order to be used in the relevant Eurocode (EN 1991-1-4).
The characteristic wind velocity is defined, according to EN 19911-4, as the 10 min mean velocity at 10 m above ground of terrain
category II (airports). Data from 31 meteorological stations,
with an average 40-year observation period, were analysed. The
characteristic wind velocity was calculated in each station, a map
of equal wind velocities was derived and characteristic values are
proposed.
1. FORWARD
The object of the present study was the calculation of
the characteristic wind velocity for the a`rea of Greece. This
velocity will be used in the relative European Standard of
Wind Loads (Eurocode 1, part 1-4).
During the last years in Greece, a considerable and
systematic effort has been undertaken aiming at drafting
new structural codes. In particular, Greece, as far as wind
action is concerned, does not has its own wind load code and
calculations are based on the German Standard DIN 1055,
part 4.
Within the framework of a previous effort aiming at
drawing up a Greek Standard [7], relevant research was
carried out [8] in which the characteristic values of the
reference wind velocity were calculated and maps of equal
velocity were elaborated. The data that served as bases for
the previous study were of two types: the quantitative data
(wind speed in m/s or miles per hour) and the qualitative data
(wind speed on the Beaufort scale). Qualitative data (in m/s)
were few in number (24 stations with an average observation
period of 13 years), while qualitative data (in Beaufort)
were much more numerous (82 stations with an average
observation period of 23 years). Quantitative data were used
to calculate characteristic values while qualitative data were
used to draw the curves of equal wind velocity. According to
[8], the characteristic wind velocity for use in the Eurocode
1 part 2-4, could be considered as follows:
1. Islands and coastal zone of the mainland (within 10 km of
the sea): 36 m/s
2. Rest of the country: 30 m/s
These values are based on a conservative estimation,
mainly due to the limited number of quantitative data. Still

5. RESULTS - CONCLUSIONS
a. Influence of wind profile (exponential or logarithmic
law). The velocity variation with height does not influence
significantly the characteristic value of the wind speed
(table 2). The largest difference occurs in the station of
Corfu: 1.8m/s (30.4m/s-28.6m/s). Thus, in the following,
the logarithmic profile is used, which complies with
Eurocode 1.
b. Influence of probability distribution (Gumbel, Weibull
or lognormal). In table 3 the characteristic wind speed is
calculated assuming the three distributions. It can be seen
that Weibull distribution results in systematically lower
values, while Gumbel distribution results in systematically
higher values. The lognormal and the Gumbel distribution
give similar results, with the largest difference in the
Station of Skyros: 1.2m/s (35.7m/s-34.5m/s). Thus, in the
