Solubility Calculation Correcting for Ionic Strength

1. Enter precipitate equilibrium as MaXb <==> aM + bX:

Enter data in the gray boxes. Do not change the yellow boxes, they contain formulas.
The Lookup Table worksheet contains the list of ions for which data is available to find activity coefficients.
The calculation is only valid for solubility of a precipitate in the absence of common ions or competing equilibria.
1. Enter the solid and the ions.
2. Enter value for Ksp.
3. Enter initial guesses for the ion concentrations based on approximate s.
4. Enter any additional ions and concentrations that will affect the ionic strength.
5. After getting one result for s, re-enter the ion concentrations for a second iteration.
Solubility is calculated from:

Ionic strength is:

where z is charge and C is concentration.

Activity coefficients are calculated from the Debye-Huckel equation:

where gamma is the activity coefficient, z is the ion charge, S is ionic strength, and alpha is the hydrated ion radius.
This equation is valid for aqueous solutions at 25C.
