If students are engaged, if theyre genuinely interested and involved in whats going on, the chances are that theyre going to learn an awful lot better because theyre not just doing what they have to do because theyre in school, theyre also actively involved in whats going on. (Harmer. 1983) In relation to the beginning of a lesson, Robertson. (2000) state that warmers activate students brains and also switch to prepare them to a second language class. The previous authors, state that a warmer should be an interesting activity to encourage the students to use English, also these activities should be short activities, they should not be a dominant part of the lesson. Moreover, do not necessarily have to be connected with the target language of the lesson and its main purpose is to get the students ready to study and work in English. In relation to strategies used to begin a lesson, Darling-Hammond, L., & Sykes, G. (1999) demonstrate different techniques that are helpful to begin a lesson regarding the preparation and motivation of the students. In this regard the first technique is related to drawing. This technique is to draw or show an image connected to the topic and ask question about it. In the same line, showing a sentence or a text to the students may activate previous knowledge and also helps to elicit reactions and vocabulary. Personalization is also a strategy which is highlighted by the authors, telling students an anecdote or story may engage students to the class and also to the topic
