Purpose of Excursion/ Educational Benefits
In Term 4, the Year Five students have been focusing on the effects of natural disasters and
how to respond safely. The DFES Education and Heritage Centre is a perfect venue for a hands
on learning experience for students with different learning abilities to be able to strive and
learn to the best of their ability. The centre is also a great opportunity for students to become
aware of the causes of natural disasters and also how to respond to each safely.
Prior to the excursion students would have been introduced to the different types of natural
disasters and the effects they have on a community. Students would have gone into detail
about fire safety within the home and the ways to help prevent it. Through a two-minute talk
they will need to explain a real life natural disaster event that has occurred and they ways
they were dealt with. The lesson prior to the excursion will give students an insight on the
different emergency response organisations which will be further covered in the excursion.
The DFES Education and Heritage Centre offers a program which is broken up into two fortyfive minute sessions. The class will be split up into two groups that switch over to work with
the centres on site teachers Peta and Paige.
One group will spend time in a classroom and will be taught about home fire safety. They are
given the opportunity to roam around four interactive learning areas which focus on fires,
floods, earthquakes and cyclones. They are taught about fire hazards in the home as well as
how to respond if an emergency were to happen in their home.
The second group will have the chance to dress up in firefighters uniforms and explore one of
the centres fire trucks. They will also be given the opportunity to learn about the history of
Perths first fire station.
