QUALITY ASSURANCE
.1

Cooling towers shall be of reputable manufacture and shall meet the

specified capacity and performance conditions. If, because of a suspected
thermal performance deficiency, the Owner chooses to conduct an on-site
thermal performance test under the supervision of a qualified, disinterested
third party in accordance with Cooling Tower Institute (CTI) standards
during the first year of operation; and if the tower fails to perform within the
limits of test tolerance; then the cooling tower manufacturer shall pay for the
cost of the test and shall make such corrections as are appropriate and
agreeable to the Owner to compensate for the performance deficiency.

The cooling tower shall be tested after assembly based on the following:
.1

Temperature
Leaving water temperatures from the tower shall be checked at
design condition in accordance with the approved performance
curves.

.2

Sound Pressure Levels

Sound tests shall be carried out under controlled conditions to verify
sound pressure levels with all fans operating at high speed and full
water flow.

TOWER, CASING
AND FILL
.1

Cooling towers shall be of FRP (fiberglass reinforced polyester)

construction manufactured with all fastenings of stainless steel or hot
dipped galvanized steel. Casings shall be fitted with access doors to reach
all internal parts, such as sumps water distribution system, without the
removal of the infill.

.2

Metal parts, including nuts, bolts, brackets and other hardware shall be
stainless steel or hot dipped galvanized steel or unless specified otherwise.

.3

Where wood members are used, they shall be treated under vacuum and
pressure with water insoluble preservative to ensure protection against
decay, fungus growth and termites attack.

.4

The basin shall be fibreglass reinforced polyester, having sufficient depth to

contain water from the distribution system, piping and fill after circulation
has stopped.
The cold water basin shall be complete with floor sloped to an integral
sump fitted with a removable screened suction outlet connection, balancing
outlet connection, overflow, quick fill, valve drain and float controlled makeup connection.

2.4

.5

Tower infill shall be of corrugated honeycomb packs, which shall be

removable or otherwise made accessible for cleaning. All PVC infill shall be
suitable for operation with inlet water temperature up to 50C.

.6

The water distribution system shall be so designed as to distribute water

evenly over the tower fill. Approved drift eliminators of the type offering
minimum air resistance and maximum entrained moisture removal from the
air shall be provided.

.7

Unit support legs, framing and structural members shall be formed for hot
dip galvanized steel.

.8

An access ladder constructed of hot dipped galvanized iron shall be

provided for gaining access to the water distribution system and fans.

FAN AND MOTOR

.1

The fan shall be of the multi-blade type of propeller or aerofoil design

fabricated from aluminium alloy or other approved corrosion resistant
materials, specifically selected for cooling tower service and be complete
with corrosion resistant screens on the discharge outlet. The fan shall be
statically and dynamically balanced at the factory after assembly in the
cooling tower.

.2

The fan shall be mounted on steel shaft, accurately finished, and

supported in ball-type bearings with provision for external lubrication, or
permanently lubricated sleeve or ball-type bearings. The fan shall
operate at maximum efficiency and minimum noise.

.3

Fan motor shall be unit mounted and connected to the fan with a V-belt
drive complete with belt guard. Belt drives shall be designed for not less
than 150% or motor capacity. Sheaves shall be selected to drive the fan at
such a speed as to produce the specified capacity.

.4

The motor shall be of the totally enclosed fan-cooled weatherproof type to

IP55 mounted outside the moist air stream. Motor shall be suitable for 415
volts, 3-phase, 50 Hertz power supply and shall have a speed not greater
than 1450rpm. The fan guard shall be corrosion resistant wire safety guard
and designed for easy removal.

.5

Motors efficiency shall comply to IEC60034-2-1 2007 and IEC60043-30

under IE2 (EFF 1) classification.

NOISE LEVELS
.1

2.6

ACCESS AND SAFETY

.1

2.7

2.8

Cooling towers shall be guaranteed to operate at low noise and shall not
exceed 75 dBA measured 2m from air louver intake and 80 dBA at 45 and
3m distance away from fan.

Service and maintenance platform must be constructed at the fan deck

level to facilitate easy inspection and maintenance of the fan machinery.
Inspection door and caged ladder shall also be provided. Louver panel shall
be removable for access to the sump, make-up, overflow and suction
strainer. HDG steel fan guard shall be provided over each fan cylinder

ELECTRICAL WORKS
.1

Refer to Section on Electrical Works: Section AC-948 Electrical Works

.2

To provide low water level electrode sensor at the water basin complete
with signal cable to control panel of condenser water pump. The condenser
water pump shall stop operating before the top water level in the water
basin is lower than the outlet pipe.

VIBRATION ISOLATION
.1

Refer to Section on Vibration Isolation: Section AC-241 Vibration Isolation
