Introduction: Ethan Edwards is a pedophile. He is one of the two
founders of Virtuous Pedophiles, a website dedicated to
supporting individuals with pedophilia. Pedophilia is a psychiatric
disorder in which an adult or older adolescent experiences a primary
or exclusive sexual attraction to prepubescent children, generally
aged 11 years or younger. Murderers leave prisons, if they leave,
with their names plastered across newspaper front pages more
often than not. Thieves are named too, so are arsonists and
embezzlers. But what of pedophiles?

Main Idea 1: A wealthy Sydney businessman had his details

suppressed so he could minimise any ongoing damage to his
reputation.

He raped his 11-year-old step daughter and his name was kept

secret yet the explicit details of his crime were laid bare.
It is unfair that his identity was kept a secret and that the
victims intimate details were not protected at all.

Main Idea 2: Tightening the noose around pedophiles, the

government of New Delhi plans to create an online database with
names and pictures of child sex offenders.

The registry for child molesters is expected to help people

especially schools and orphanages to check antecedents of

employees.
Countries like United Kingdom, United States and Australia are
among those who maintain such registries to ensure families
are safe from pedophiles.

Main Idea 3: According to Rita Panicker from Butterflies, an NGO

working against child exploitation and abuse, this was long overdue.

Child sex offenders often manage to jump bail, find

employment elsewhere, and are difficult to track by

authorities.
This will help the process of tracking and nabbing them since
police verification was not mandatory for employment in India.

Conclusion: It is vital to understand sexual attraction to children in

order to prevent child sexual abuse. At present, our laws and
policies often isolate individuals with pedophilia from resources that
prevent abuse, exacerbating public health and criminal law
problems. The rights of individuals with pedophilia, however, are in
themselves and appropriate concern for the law. We should not
ignore inconsistent or unjust laws simply because they only affect
those who provoke revulsion. Lawmakers, courts and scholars must
continue re-examine this topic as our understanding of pedophilia
evolves. Further reflection is vital to improve both the laws that
address pedophilia and the lives of the individuals and communities
these laws affect.
