CE 123 Managing the Built Environment

AY 2015

Exam Information
Identification to be provided at the examination
Note that you need to take both your HKID and your PolyU Student ID to the exam.
Failure to show these will result in interruption to your exam as you will have to sign forms
etc. acknowledging to failure to produce identification. You will also be required to present
yourself to the Faculty Office within 2 days of the exam to show your ID and provide sample
signatures.
Exam format
The duration of the exam is 2 hours.
The exam paper has 2 sections, one for BSE and one for BRE. Each section will be separately
bound or stapled.
There are 2 versions of the exam paper. The questions are the same for both papers but are
presented in a different sequence. The 2 versions are printed on different coloured paper so do
not panic if people around you appear to have a different exam paper.
The BSE section has 50 multiple choice (MC) questions, each question is worth 1 mark.
You should select one answer for each question. Answers should be recorded in the table
provided at the bottom of each page of the question paper. Marks will not be deducted for an
incorrect answer.
The questions are not arranged by topic. A recognised exam technique is to make several
passes through the paper and answer questions relating to one topic only on each pass.
Remember to write your name & student ID at the top of each page before handing in your
answer script.
Scope
All topics may be examined. This includes the self-reading topic, Built environment, society
and economy.
Calculations, Equations etc.
There is very little calculation content in the exam but you will be expected to know formulae
that are just simple averages or ratios, or involve just 3 or less parameters with integer
constants [e.g. v = f].
Any equations that are complex or have non-integer constants will be given to you but you
will need to know what the variables/parameters are as the nomenclature will not be given.
I have presented several types of data as time profiles. You should be aware of trends in the
data and approximate proportions of components rather than the actual values. Likewise you
should be aware of key numbers such as the approximate contributions/consumptions of the
most significant resource consumers.

You will need to know definitions where these have been given in the powerpoints and
supplementary notes. In some cases definitions may be given in charts or diagrams.
You are not expected to memorise the tables of OEL concentration data, recommended air
change rates etc. Any necessary data tables or charts will be provided in the exam paper but
you should know how to interpret the given data.
You should also be aware of key values such as in some of the environmental measurements
and maintenance requirements we have looked at that would require the building or facility
manager to take some action or, alternatively, environmental conditions that should be
avoided.
You are not expected to remember the Chapter numbers of specific regulations, but where
there are legal requirements or responsibilities you should be aware of the title of the
controlling regulation, e.g. Occupational Health & Safety Ordinance, Fire Service
(Installations and Equipment) Regulations etc. As we have looked at very different
regulations it is probably sufficient for you to remember them as health & Safety (or H & S)
regs (regs = regulations) / fire regs / electrical regs etc.
You will need to know specific time periods or intervals mentioned in the regulations and
procedures that we have looked at.
