Themostbasiccomponentoffilmlanguageistheshot,anindividualsegmentoffilm.Eachshotinafilm
conveysamessagethat,whencombinedwithothershots,formthebuildingblocksofthestory.
TypesofShots:
Thereareseveraldifferenttypesofcamerashotssubjectsize,cameraangleandcameramovement.In
thisvideo,wewillfocusonthesizeofthesubjectintheframeofthecamera.
TheExtremeLongShot(ELS)coversavastarea.Thistypeofshotprovidesabroadcontext,usuallyfor
theentirestorylineofthefilm.Itcanconveygeographicallocationorthepassingoftime.
AWideShot(WS)focusesprimarilyontheenvironment.Thecameraisfarawayfromtheactionandsets
thecontextorlocationforaparticularsceneorevent.
TheLongShot(LS)typicallyincludesafullviewofthehumansubjectwithsomeoftheenvironmentaround
himorher.Typically,theLongShotisusedtoshowaction.
MediumShots(MS)framethesubjectfromthewaistup.Sinceitallowsthesubjectenoughroomtomove
aroundinsidetheframe,itisidealforactivesubjects.
AMediumCloseUp(MCU)isslightlywiderthanaCloseUp.Itusuallyframestheheadanduppertorso,
cuttingoffatmidchest.Thistypeofshotcanconveyemotionandhelptheaudienceconnectwiththe
subject.
AnExtremeCloseUp(ECU)iswherethesubjectextendsbeyondtheboundariesoftheframe.Ifthe
subjectisaperson,thistypeofshotcreatestensionandintensityasitcanrevealdeepemotionsor
thoughts.
