Pipeline Theatre Company, known for its imaginative and adventurous storytelling, presents the
New York premiere of Dave Malloy and Jason Craigs BEARDO, a new rock musical that
chronicles the ascent and demise of infamous mystic Rasputin, and the fall of the Russian
Romanov dynasty.
In this eight-person ensemble musical, we are seeking adventurous and game actor/singers who
have a strong command of text and excellent singing abilities and are excited to be part of an
offbeat, sexy, dangerous world. This is expected to be a very physical production and all cast
members must be extremely comfortable with expressing themselves through physicality.
PLEASE NOTE: We are committed to casting a diverse company. Please submit qualified
people of all ethnicities, genders and gender identities, and backgrounds, disabled and nondisabled.

SEEKING:
BEARDO. Male-identified. 20s-30s. A rockstar. Charismatic. Dark, mysterious, and
powerful. Oozes sex appeal, despite being quite off-center. A dark presence. The kind of
person everyone wants to sleep with regardless of sexual orientation, though they dont know
why. Keyed into a world beyond that which can be seen. Wild and unpredictable. Driven both
by something genuine and heartfelt and also a rebellious urge to knock the world off its axis. At
heart, something naive and childlike about him. This is a role for a singer with substantial text
skills. Baritenor with a rock sound. MUST PLAY GUITAR. NON-AEA.
TSAR. Male-identified. 30s. Almost an ingenue. Delicate. High status, even prissy. Not
particularly connected to the country he rules or its people, but can sometimes make himself
believe he is. Both surprisingly playful and possessing unexpected emotional depth. Endearing,
even in some of his most preposterous behavior. A man trying to retain his leadership role and

his marriage without much of a grasp on how to do so. A role for a singer with great comedic
skills and access to finding truth within comedy. Baritone. NON-AEA.
TSARISTA. Female-identified. 30s. Distinctive, dualistic, an outsider and foreigner with an
intrinsic sadness. Initially icy and aloof and biting, isolated even from her husband and court.
Deeply devoted to her sickly son. Blossoms when her son is healed, and transforms into a wild,
hot-blooded woman full of life and passion. At times angry, at times sad, at times wildly happy,
but always with an intensity bubbling at her core. A role for a singer with a capacity for deepfelt emotional range. Strong, flexible Mezzo Soprano (D3 - F5). NON-AEA.
YUSAPOOF. Male-identified. Late 20s-40s. A count in the Tsars court. The brains behind
the plan to murder Beardo. Successful, slick, a smart player of the game. High status,
privileged, and intelligent. Decisive, a leader. Gets what he wants. Keeps his eyes open and is
at ease manipulating the world around him for his own purposes. Enjoys his position and his
plans. As someone who uses the system to achieve his means, is threatened by Beardos
complete lack of respect for the hierarchy of his world. Is the one person able to throw Beardo
off his game. Tenor. NON-AEA.
SHACK MAN/MAN OF THE COURT/MURDERER. Male-identified. Late 30s-50s. As
SHACK MAN, mild-mannered, kind, genial, easygoing. Unpolished and unadorned. Open and
generous. Has been living in a shack in an isolated rural area and has all he needs there.
Comfortable talking at length to himself as well as to strangers. His needs are simple, and so is
his way of thinking about his life. This role will double with others, likely a privileged and selfimportant MAN OF THE COURT and A MURDERER. Flexible baritone, guitar a plus. NONAEA.
SHACK WOMAN/WOMAN OF THE COURT. Female-identified. 30s-40s. As SHACK
WOMAN, observant and keen, sharp and biting. Has shut down all of her true desires and is
aware of that fact; compensates by controlling her world and the people in it and acting out
toward them. Is driven by a genuine god-fearing nature and a need to carry out the lessons she
has been taught. This role will double with others, likely a gossipy, snide, privileged WOMAN
OF THE COURT. Low mezzo soprano, possibly with a folk or rock quality. NON-AEA.
SHACK SISTER/WOMAN OF THE COURT. Female-identified. 20s-40s. As SHACK
SISTER, repressed, haunted, aching for more. Hasnt spoken in fifteen years until Beardo shows
up and gives her permission to free herself from her sisters bonds. Craves liberation and
release. When she taps into the rawness and desire that Beardo opens her up to, shes overcome
by her basest urges and refuses to be pent up again. This role will double with others, likely a
gossipy, snide, privileged WOMAN OF THE COURT. Flexible mezzo soprano, possibly with a
folk or rock quality. NON-AEA.
PERSON OF THE COURT/MURDERER. Male-identified or non-binary. 20s-50s. As a
PERSON OF THE COURT, self-important, privileged, judgmental. Enjoys high status without
any of the pressure experienced by the actual monarchy. Not afraid to speak their mind, not
interested in matters of any weight. As a MURDERER, flamboyant, arrogant, action-oriented.

A follower, but enthusiastic and completely on board with Yusapoofs plans. Tenor. NONAEA.
