The student began taking college classes in high school through ISU and completed three core courses early in their college career. The most useful early class was COM S 309, a group project class that taught software design techniques and how to work in groups. Another group class, CPR E 288, consisted of the student and three electrical engineers, requiring the student to divide up programming work. The student was only partially involved in extracurricular activities and wishes they had participated more. In their spare time, they researched creating an operating system and learned new languages like Rust and JavaScript independently.

I began classes at ISU when I was still in high school. My first
experience with college classes was COM S 227. By the time I had started my freshman year I had completed three core courses for my program so I took some more advanced classes earlier in my college career than most students. The most useful class I took early on was COM S 309: a group project class. 309 required us to create a group of four students and develop a piece of software over the course of the semester. The class served as a useful trial by fire of figuring out how to design a large software project from scratch. Before this class there werent any real classes on software design so we got to learn firsthand what techniques worked and which didnt. Other group classes taught me how to work in groups where not everyone was on the same page. CPR E 288 is a robotics programming course taken by both computer engineering majors and electrical engineers. The group I had in that class consisted of three electrical engineers and myself. The group project was entirely programming based and I was the only student in my group who knew how to program. So, I had to figure out how to divide up the work so that no one was overwhelmed.
I unfortunately did not participate many extracurricular activities. I was
a member of mock trial for half of my first year, which I was in primarily because I had been in mock trial in high school. I had a passing interest in game development club and mobile development club but I never ended up attending any of their meetings. If I were to start college over from the beginning that is something that I would like to change. What I did do outside of class was learn topics that were interesting to me on my own. In my spare time, I researched the basics of creating an operating system. I also learned some new languages such as Rust and JavaScript. I enjoy learning new topics and will likely continue to do so on my own long after I graduate.
