Geometry Lesson Plan: Classifying Triangles

This lesson plan is for a 3rd grade math class on classifying triangles by their sides. It will take 45 minutes. Students will learn about equilateral, isosceles, and scalene triangles by reading descriptions, filling out a graphic organizer, and answering questions. They will then create a song, poem or picture about scalene triangles. To assess understanding, students will complete the graphic organizer and do a triangle search activity. The lesson provides intervention and enrichment options.

Standards/Elements: CCGPS, GPS/GSE (where applicable) and TAG Standards

MGSE3.G.1 Understand that shapes in different categories may share attributes, & that the
shared attributes can define a larger category.

Enduring Understanding
I can identify and describe similarities and differences between triangles that are
classified by their sides. (equilateral, isosceles, scalene)

Essential Question(s)
What should students know when lesson is completed?

How do you classify triangles by the length of their sides?

Teacher Lesson Preparation

Activating Strategy (for example: Hook/Mini-Lesson/Warm-Up/Connection to Prior Learning)

Ask the students: What do we know about triangles? What do we know about sorting and/or
classifying? How do we do it? Who can do it? What might we classify? Talk with a partner
and then we will share with the group.
Lets use our graphic organizer to begin to classify triangles.

Instructional Sequence and Activities including use of technology

Read aloud Classification of Triangles (Show on interactive board- read in chunks focusing on
one triangle at a time) [Link]
Fill in graphic organizer for equilateral triangle.

Ask a Mastery Question: What are the characteristics of an equilateral triangle?

Ask an Understanding Question: If all triangles measure 180 degrees, what will the angles of
an equilateral triangle measure?
1. Read aloud Classification of Triangles (Show on interactive board- read in chunks
focusing on one triangle at a time)
Fill in graphic organizer for isosceles triangle.
Ask Mastery Question: What are the characteristic of an isosceles triangle?
Ask an Understanding Question: If all triangles measure 180 degrees, what could the angles of
an isosceles triangle measure?
2. Read aloud Classification of Triangles (Show on interactive board- read in chunks
focusing on one triangle at a time)
Fill in graphic organizer for a scalene triangle.
Give an Interpersonal Question: In your own words, explain what to look for if you want to
classify a triangle.
Give a Self-Expressive Task: Create a song, poem, story or picture describing a scalene
triangle.
Synthesis: Complete graphic organizer with the similarities of the triangles.

Assessment Strategies
Formative: Check mastery as the students complete their graphic organizer.
Summative: Triangle Search
Differentiation
Scaffolds/ Interventions/Extensions/Enrichment

Intervention: Have a picture of each triangle for the students to reference to when completing activity.
Enrichment: Have the students compare and contrast acute, obtuse, and right triangles. Then have
them make the comparison of those triangles to a scalene, isosceles, and equilateral triangle. They
will use an additional graphic organizer and reference text on an acute, obtuse and right triangle.
