Discussion:
To determine if there are impurities present in the water, samples of it were
placed in an evaporating dish to be observed. In the first sample which was
distilled water, after it turned to vapour, only a barely visible stain was seen. This
suggests that the water is pure. In tap water however, the stain was noticeable,
this implies that the water has a lot of dissolved minerals in it. The tap water has
been categorized as hard water - water that has a high concentration of
magnesium and calcium or other minerals. When aqueous ammonia has been
left to evaporate, it left a stain, indicating that there are impurities in the solution.
When a red litmus paper was exposed to ammonium hydroxide, it turned
blue, this suggests that the compound was basic. The gelatinous substance seen
was salt produced by ammonia when it reacts with other elements. In the original
solution, there is a gelatinous substance which is assumed to be salt, because it
was solid, when the solution passed through a filter paper the salt was separated.
The foul odor was caused by the ammonia gas escaping the solution.
