Abstract
Todeterminetheetiologyofacuteconjunctivitisinchildrenseeninpediatricpractice,99patientswith
conjunctivitisand102ageandseasonmatchedcontrolswereculturedforaerobicbacteriaincluding
Haemophilusinfluenzae,andforviruses,Chlamydiatrachomatis,andmycoplasmas.Agentsstatistically
associatedwithconjunctivitisincludedH.influenzae(42%vs0%),Streptococcuspneumoniae(12%vs
3%),andadenoviruses(20%vs0%).Oneofthesethreeetiologicagentswasisolatedfrom71(72%)of
thepatients.Simultaneousinfectionwithtwopathogenswasuncommon.Staphylococcusaureuswas
equallyprevalentindiseasedandcontroleyesonestrainofC.trachomatiswasisolatedfromacontrol
eye.Althoughtherewerevariationsintheclinicalfeaturesofviralandbacterialconjunctivitis,
differentiationinanindividualpatientwasdifficult.Anadenoviruswasisolatedfrom11(65%)of17
patientswhohadpharyngitisinadditiontoconjunctivitis.H.influenzaewasisolatedfrom14(74%)of19
childrenwhohadbothotitisandconjunctivitis.AdenovirusconjunctivitiswascommoninthefallandH.
