Introduction of Amorphous Alloy Magnetic Material

Manufacturing Process of Amorphous Metal Ribbon

C
D

1. Amorphous alloy
A melting alloy that has proper composition of metallic elements is extremely rapid quenched
at the rate of 106 per second, it is too fast to let the disordered atomic-scale structure become
crystalline in its solid state, as a result, amorphous alloy is to be formed. Its atom structure is nonordered and similar to the glass, therefore the amorphous alloy is also called glass metal. The
features of metallic elements and disordered non-crystalline structure make the amorphous alloy
own unique and superior properties.

2. Atom model

A: Raw materials are melted down in

induction furnace.
B: Melt is transferred to the feeder section.
C: Control of casting head.
D: Thin lm of melt is ejected onto the
rapid quenching wheel.
E: Jet is quenched at 106 per second to
form an amorphous strip.
F: Strip width & thickness are measured in
line and fed back for process control.
G: Strip is guided to the thread-up unit for
take-up.
H: Strip take-up.

Amorphous core transformer not only
can reduce the power loss of the
power system but also can reduce
the power development costs and
fuel costs, potentially reducing CO2
emissions, reducing air pollution, acid
rain and greenhouse effects.

Non- crystalline Amorphous alloy

3. Performance of Amorphous alloy

The amorphous alloy posses excellent soft magnetic properties such as high saturation
magnetic, low coercivity and high permeability,
Non-crystalline has a high resistivity than crystalline, therefore, the eddy current loss that
generated when amorphous alloy is in the AC magnetisc field can be obviously reduced.
The very low core loss will be found when amorphous alloy is adopted for the core.
Good temperature stability.

process is adopted for producing the
patented amorphous alloy ribbon which
is now belong to and manufactured by
Hitachi Metal a Japanese company.
Refer to the left manufacturing process
comparison, the amorphous ribbon is
extremely simple, its production process
does not consume large amount of
energy, therefore, we can say it is a
typical environmental friendly material.
On the contrary, the manufacturing
process of CRGO silicon steel is more
complicated, large energy is consumed
during the process, it is a high energyconsuming product.

magnetization curves of amorphous
alloy ribbon and CRGO silicon steel.
The close areas surrounded by the
curves represent energy loss when
an alternate magnetic eld passes
through the magnetic materials.
It is obvious that the two areas of
amorphous and CRGO are quite
different, 70% ~ 80% difference
is found according to actual
measurement, i.e. the no load loss of
transformer can be reduced about
70% ~ 80% when CRGO silicon steel
is replaced with amorphous alloy
ribbon.

Slow

1. Amorphous alloy material consumes low energy.

2. Amorphous core us annealed at 360 and consumes
less energy.

1. Extra investment will be returned in 3 5 years.

2. The AMDT will continuously save the electricity and its
running cost after investment is returne.

Fast

1. Silicon steel production consumes higher energy.

2. Silicon steel core is annealed at 800 and consumes
higher energy.

The cost of CRGO transformer as a base data

The core loss of AMDT is very low, less heat is generated,

the operation temperature is low, therefore, the insulation
degradation is slow, and this will longer the operating life span of
the transformer.
Compared to CRGO, the excellent magnetic characteristics of
Amorphous alloy material makes the losses generated by high
frequencies just about 1/10, harmonic effects arising from the
Iron losses can also be reduced drastically.
1. Low consumption of energy in material process and low
losses of AMDT can save a lot of energy, therefore, less gases
such as SO2, CO2 and NOX are emitted from power plant,
environmental pollution can be substantially reduced.
2. When the life-span of Amorphous transformer ends, the
Amorphous alloy can be recycled, no environmental pollution
is created.
3. Energy saving is a main goal of ISO 14000.
Compared the total owning cost of AMDT with CRGO
transformers, the extra cost of Amorphous transformer paid by
the owner can be returned within 3-5 years.

7. Core material and its structure

7-1 The Amorphous alloy ribbon supplied

by Hitahi, Japan is adopted for the
core. The surface of the cores are

provide the protection against impulse
voltage (Surge-proof).Windings and
leads are well supported and xed for
withstanding the electromechancial
strength caused by the short circuits
at load side .The sufcient oil ducts
arrangement is made for the excellent
oil circulation inside and between the
windings, so that a low temperature
gradient between conductors and oil
is assured, and local overheating shall
not occur. Drying treatment under
vacuum with moderate temperature
is performed while the windings
are tightly clamped to ensure the
exact size of windings. C.C.A. is dried
under vacuum, and a vacuum oil
impregnated process will be executed
immediately after nishing tanking
process to ensure the quality of
transformer

8-2 High temperature resistant enameled

at or round copper wires are adopted
for high voltage windings for attaining
the lowest losses and excellent
dielectric performance between

adopted for secondary winding,
unbalanced ampere-turn will not occur
between windings. It can also have
minimum short-circuit electromechanical
force, the best thermal conductivity
without occuring hotspot.
8-6 In order to obtain the best withstanding
voltage insulation capacity with the
best anti-short-circuit electromechanical
force strength and short-term overload
capacity, resin coated insulating paper
(temperature rise 65 ) shall be placed
between coil layers.

withstand a pressure of 25% greater
than the maximum operating pressure
without permanent deformation. The
cover is provided with a hand-hole and
tted to the tank by bolts. All weld seams
and connecting joints shall be oil tight
thus there is no oil leaks. Inside the tank
shall be outtted with guide pins that will
prevent the displacement of CCA during
transportation and operation.There is an
ample space between CCA and tank
bottom for residue accumulation.
9-2 The base for the tank shall has enough
mechanical strength for the movement
of the transformer in forward, backward
and sidewise directions.
9-3 Gasket retainers shall be installed on all
contact surfaces of gaskets for prevent
gaskets slipping.

9-4 The transformer shall be equipped with

enough radiators for air nature capacity.
The radiator shall be designed and
manufactured with carefully chosen
material to withstand possible corrosion.

19

9-5 According to transformers capacity and

actual requirements, the manufacturer
shall provide suitable accessories such as
thermometers and oil gauges. Types of
these accessories shall be in accordance
with the recommendations of IEEE C57.12
or IEC 60076. If customer has additional
requirements, shall negotiate with the
supplier.

10. Cooling devices

10-1 Air nature and air forced cooling devices

for a dual capacities of transformer
shall be installed according to the
customer specifications with control
equipment, cooling fans, motors,
radiator and piping.The cooling fans
shall be driven by an unit motor and
controlled by a temperature relay for
start and stop automatically. Automatic
and manual operating control switches
shall be installed in terminal box xed on
transformer tank.

10-2 All the control and signal contacts of

cooling device shall be connected
to the terminal board inside the
connection box.
10-3 A standard motor rated with 3-phase
220V 60Hz for cooling fans are provided
