set your clocks BACK one hour before bed on Saturday night.

Election Day
We are blessed to live in a country where its residents are allowed to have
a voice in the election of its leaders. Please take the time to put this
privilege into practice. Vote on November 8.

Several weeks ago, there was some discussion about holding a

Thanksgiving dinner here at Aldersgate Thanksgiving Day, November
24th. Our thoughts are that many households are small and the
difficulty of celebrating this special time of thankfulness may be difficult
for some and perhaps even lonely for others. Wouldnt it be a good
time to celebrate with your church family if you are not going out of
town or hosting your own meal with family and friends? Before we
make too many plans though, we need your input. If you think this is
something you would be interested in, please respond today on the
communication card in your bulletin, or you can see Kathy Morse or
email her @ morsekmm@gmail.com. Once we have enough responses,
we will then move forward on the details and get the information to you
as to time, menu, cost, if any and so forth. Also, if anyone has a turkey
fryer that would be available for us to use, please let Kathy know.

Help Us Welcome Our Guests!

Toddler Playgroup
AUMC Playgroup will meet Tuesday, November 8, 9:30 a.m. at Pen Park,
1400 Pen Park Road, Charlottesville. Lets enjoy some of the beautiful Fall
weather weve been having and get in some park time! Please bring a
snack and plan to do some climbing, running, and sliding with us. In case
of inclement weather, we will meet in the unfinished fellowship hall of the
church.

Each Sunday we send out personal notes to those who visit with us for
the first time. This is an opportunity to share the fact that Aldersgate is a
welcoming church family. Volunteers write these notes and we have 2
openings to fill. We only ask you to do this once a month and there are
usually 2 or 3 notes to be written. After going through the attendance
sheets on Sunday afternoon, I email the names of those who we want to
receive a welcoming note. I am happy to give you ideas as what to say.
Please let me know if you would be willing to help with this. Jeanne
Hamlin, 434.973.9889 or jeaham@comcast.net

Volunteers Needed
Here is a great opportunity for a family, couple or individual to be part
of the team that performs a much needed but simple job at church. It
takes very little time and you can work it around your own schedule.
Plus, there are no meetings or public speaking. Join the Altar Guild!
Members of the Altar Guild sign up by the month, then each week are
responsible for replenishing the oil in the candles on the altar and the
acolytes hand held candle. They periodically need to change the
paraments (decorative cloths) on the altar and lectern that correspond
to the different seasons within the liturgical calendar. They also have a
schedule for changing the banners that adorn the altar area. If you are
interested or want to know more, please contact Kimberley Roll at 9736382 or rollwell3@gmail.com.

ALDERSGATE TO HOST WOMENS PACEM

Aldersgate UMC will once again host the PACEM (People and
Congregations Engaged in Ministry) womens shelter from November
12th through the 19th. Opportunities to help include greeting our guests
as they arrive, laundering towels, preparing snacks, helping in the
kitchen, spending time with our guests, and staying overnight. Volunteer
sign-up sheets are currently available in the Reed Room. We will be
collecting items for the shelter through Sunday, November 11 th.
Donation boxes are located in the Reed Room and the Welcome Center.
Personal items: Chapstick, lotion, ladies socks (athletic and dress).
Food: Gum, mints, hard candy, snack bags of potato chips, pretzels,
Cheetos, soft snack bars, tea bags, hot chocolate mix, lemonade mix,
Splenda and sugar. Other: new or gently used bath towels and current
magazines. Monetary contributions are accepted to buy food and paper
goods, and to help with other expenses related to hosting the program.
Please make checks payable to AUMC with PACEM in the memo.

Defying Gravity:
Break Free from the Culture of More
For the last four weeks we have been celebrating a church-wide
stewardship program called Defying Gravity, where we have been
challenged to be thoughtful about our role as stewards, to
understand that generosity does not just happen by accident, and
to prayerfully consider how God is calling each of us to be
generous in the year ahead. We must learn
more and more to see our lives as
belonging to God and trust that God will
direct our lives in a generous way that will
bring us joy and significance. It is now time
to reach for joy and significance and to
respond.
All who call Aldersgate Church their
spiritual home are asked to return an
Estimate of Giving card for the coming year
beginning today. The Estimate of Giving
card is a starting point in the process of
living a more generous life and sharing your gratitude. When Jesus
taught, "For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also
and "You cannot serve God and wealth," he knew that generosity
changes the way we look at life. Thank you for all that you do to
support God's work at Aldersgate Church. It is a blessing to be in
ministry with you at Aldersgate Church!
In God's Love and Service,

Announcements
If you have an announcement to include in the weekly bulletin, please
have it to the church office NO LATER than 5pm on Tuesday. Call
434.973.5806 or email aldersgate@cvaumc.org.

Trunk or Treat 2016

TODAY!!
Join us in the lower parking lot (facing the Fashion Square Mall) TODAY
from 4PM until 6PM for this fun and safe event for children & families.
We invite all children to dress up and trick-or-treat from trunk to trunk!
We ask that all children are accompanied by an adult age 18+ and that
no adult wears a mask that completely covers her/his face. This year we
look forward to having representatives from the Albemarle Country
Police Department, and the local volunteer Rescue Squad and Fire
Department. Additionally, we'll have a bouncy house, free train rides in
the parking lot, crafts, a petting zoo, and free hot dogs (available until
we run out, which could be before 6pm.)
Families, classes, group of friends, individuals, and anyone else who
would like is invited to decorate a vehicle trunk! For the second year in
a row there will be a prize for the best decorated trunk, plus bragging
rights until next year's Trunk-or-Treat!
Everyone who decorates his/her/their trunk is asked to bring candy
(individually wrapped & store-bought) for the trick-or-treaters. (This
year we're also asking you to have a small bowl of gluten, peanut, and
tree nut free candies. A list of ideas is below. Don't let this be a
deterrent, it's easy and the families visiting us will appreciate your
thoughtfulness so much! Please see Rachel Miller with questions.) Since
we're expecting hundreds of children we are also asking church
members to donate bags of candy. Collection bins are now available in
the Narthex and the entrance near the church office. Along with the
usual holiday candy, we're asking for donations of candy that is gluten,
peanut, and tree nut free. Some ideas are Tootsie Rolls, Tootsie Pops,
Haribo candies, and Smarties. Additionally, if you would like to donate
to help us cover our costs for the free hot dogs we'll be providing to
the community and for the petting zoo, checks may be made to
"AMUC" with "Trunk or Treat" in the memo. Cash should be put in the
offering plate in an envelope clearly marked "Trunk or Treat."
Questions? See Rachel Miller.

Host / Hostess Needed for Sip n Chat

We are in need of a new host/hostess family or families for the 1st
Sunday of the month and the 5th Sunday of the month. This is for Sip n
Chat after the 9am service. At this time we have a sign up in the back of
the Reed Room for open spots.
Please e-mail Tina Shifflett
(shiff82@earthlink.net)
or
Jennifer
Hamlin
(Jennifer@eventswithpanache.com). We would love to get you on the
schedule, even if for one Sunday at a time. Thank you for your
consideration!

College Student Care Packages

Believe it or not, it's almost time to send care packages out to our
college students! We do this so that they will know that they are in our
thoughts and prayers. But in order to do this, we need your help in
donating the contents of the packages. We will be collecting candy,
chocolate, gum, pens, pencils, crackers, popcorn, hot chocolate and any
other individually wrapped items that you think a college student might
enjoy to help them get through exams. Leftover Halloween candy is
welcome! Please put your donations in the tub marked for college
students in the hospitality room. We will be gathering these items
through November 21. Questions? Call Susan Reed at 973-0766 or
email at reedr3va@gmail.com. Thanks for your help; these really do
mean a lot to the college kids!

New Sunday School Study

The AGAPE Sunday School class will begin a new study on Sunday,
November 6th at 9:00 in Room 108. We will be using a video series by
Pastor Robert Morris, founder of Gateway Church. Please come by and
visit with us. We look forward to seeing you. Questions? Feel free to
contact Jeanne Hamlin, jeaham@comcast.net or 434-973-9889.

Veterans Day Sunday

On Sunday, November 13, we will honor our veterans with a Veterans
Day recognition slide show. Please submit photos of your veteran in
uniform to Chelsea Morse at ChelseaMorse@cvaumc.org by Monday,
November 7. (You should receive a confirmation email in response.)
Thank you for helping us thank our veterans!
