Night time and stormy weather used to create ominous atmosphere

Technical Codes

Unusual shots and angles used to disorientate viewer


POV shots and handheld camera shots used to put viewer in the middle of the
action
Close-ups and extreme close-ups used to disorientate
Low-key lighting used to create dark, menacing shots

Iconography

Black and red colour scheme used to represent blood and death
Props such as knives, machetes, chainsaws, guns

Narrative

Protagonist who attempts to solve problem/defeat villain


The villain is often either a psychopathic murderer or a monster of some
description
The threat can also be from one or multiple paranormal beings
The victims tend to come across as stupid, unnecessarily putting themselves
in dangerous situations throughout the movie
