TOPICS FOR TEACHING DEMONSTRATION

SONG TO CELIA (Copy of the poetry provided below). During the demonstration, the
teacher should take note of the following:
Be able to discuss the figurative language used in the poem
Who is the persona talking?

Is there any rhyming scheme or sound devices used?

Explore the significance of the poem in today's world

Ideally, it has to be student-centered. Students need to discover for themselves how the
figures of speech are used in the poetry below.

This skill is tested in IGCSE First Language English ( Papers 1,2 and 3 both core and
extended).

SONG TO CELIA
Drink to me only with thine eyes,

And I will pledge with mine;

Or leave a kiss but in the cup,
And I'll not look for wine.
The thirst that from the soul doth rise
Doth ask a drink divine;
But might I of Jove's nectar sup,
I would not change for thine.
I sent thee late a rosy wreath,
Not so much honouring thee

As giving it a hope, that there

It could not withered be.
But thou thereon didst only breathe,
And sent'st it back to me;
Since when it grows, and smells, I swear,
Not of itself, but thee.
