"A PSALM OF
LIFE"
By: Henry Wadsworth Longfellow ³Not enjoyment, and not sorrow,
Is our destined end or way;
¹Tell me not, in mournful numbers, But to act, that each to-morrow
Life is but an empty dream!— Find us farther than to-day.
For the soul is dead that slumbers,

And things are not what they seem. ⁴Art is long, and Time is fleeting,

And our hearts, though stout and brave,
²Life is real! Life is earnest! Still, like muffled drums, are beating
And the grave is not its goal; Funeral marches to the grave.
Dust thou art, to dust returnest,
Was not spoken of the soul.
⁵In the world's broad field of battle, ⁷Lives of great men all remind us
In the bivouac of Life, We can make our lives sublime,
Be not like dumb, driven cattle! And, departing, leave behind us
Be a hero in the strife! Footprints on the sands of time;

⁶Trust no Future, howe'er pleasant! ⁸Footprints, that perhaps another,

Let the dead Past bury its dead! Sailing o'er life's solemn main,
Act,—act in the living Present! A forlorn and shipwrecked brother,
Heart within, and God o'erhead! Seeing, shall take heart again.
⁹Let us, then, be up and doing,
With a heart for any fate;
Still achieving, still pursuing,
Learn to labor and to wait.
