by Gauss method (using line subtractions) and Cramers methods (using determinants and
cofactors) and show that both methods give the same answer.
3) The basis vectors of a new coordinate system expressed in the unit vectors of a standard
coordinate system (i, j, k) are
e1 = i + j + k
e2 = i j + k .
(2)
e3 = i + j k
a)Write a transformation matrix U to the new coordinate system and the inverse matrix
U .
b)Express vector x = i + 2j k in the new coordinate system Use Cramers rule and
Gauss method and show that they both give the same result.
c) Express vector x = e1 + e2 + e3 in the old coordinate system.
d) Find the magnitudes of the vectors e1 , e3 , e3 and the angles between them.
