Benedicts reagent will

oxidize
all
reducing
sugars
that
contain
aldoses and ketoses. On
the other hand, Barfoeds
reagent will only oxidize
monosaccharides.
Another difference is that
Benedicts
reagent
is
slightly alkaline
while
Barfoeds
reagent
is
slightly acidic.

4. Can the Seliwanoffs test be

used to differentiate sucrose
from fructose? Why?
No, because fructose is a
monosaccharide
component of sucrose.
Both carbohydrates will
form
hydroxymethylfurfural
because
of
the
ketohexoses
found
in
them.
5. Draw
the
hydrolysis
product/s of sucrose and
starch.

Sucrose Hydrolysis

carbohydrate chain which

traps iodine in between
these
structures,
therefore
fastidiously
decreasing the iodine
present in the body.
Moreover, starch forms a
complex
with
iodine
which is usually color
blue,
indicating
the
formation of the said
complex.
