somethingthatshouldbeavoided.ThisisbecausetheA490specificationisintendedtocoverheavyhexheadboltsfor
structuralsteelconnectionsonly.ThisismentionedinseveralplaceswithintheA490specification.Thereareacoupleof
problemswithtryingtomakeA490anchorboltsorrods.First,becausetheA490specificationisintendedforaspecific
application,itcallsforveryshortthreadlengthsthataretiedtotheboltsdiameter(regardlessofboltlength).Thesecond
problemisthattheA490specificationhasverystringenttestingrequirementsincludingamagneticparticleinspectiontest
thatisnotrequiredbyotherASTMfastenerspecifications.Thisaddsunnecessarycostandleadtimedelaystothe
productionthatthereissimplynoneedfor.ForanchorboltswiththesamestrengthandchemistryasanA490structural
bolt,butwithouttheconstraintsonapplication,configuration,threadlength,andspecialtestingrequirements,ASTMA354
GradeBDshouldconsidered.Ascanbeseeninthechartbelow,inthediameterscoveredbytheA490specification
(1/211/2)thetwospecshavenearlyidenticalstrengthrequirements.
