Music Video Analysis

Kendrick Lamar - Alright

The music video starts with a 2 minute monologue of a poem from Kendrick Lamar which was
originally a letter written as a tribute to Tupac Shakur. In this monologue he talks about how it is
to be a young black male in his society and how people especially the police would discriminate
against the black minorities A war that was based on apartheid and discrimination

After the monologue a shot shows Kendrick Lamar and three other people riding in car and
which would normally be a genre signifier of a rap song; however after a few lines of the song
go by it then cuts to a long shot of the car that shows four policemen carrying the car for them.
This shows that the tables have turned and how they have now risen above the police.

One of the following shots show Kendrick Lamar rising from the ground as if he flying, the lyrics
in shot is Nigga, we gon be alright . To me this signifies his hope for the society and how he
wants minorities to rise and to be seen as equal; through these lyrics he is also trying to
reassure black people that eventually everythings going to be alright.

Music Video Analysis

Kendrick Lamar - Alright

During the end of the music video an extreme long shot of Kendrick Lamar standing on a lamp
post cuts to a mid shot of a policeman pointing his finger at Kendrick as if he is about to shoot
him. This shot to me shows how it doesnt matter how high you rise above the police or how
equal you are in the eyes of society there is always going to be someone that will try to
discriminate or bring you down.

The music video ends with Kendrick Lamar getting shot with policemans finger gun and him
falling down from the lamp post in slow motion. While he is falling from the lamp post Kendrick
Lamar says the same poem at the start of the song and now we are where we were at the start
of the music video, except now he is dying. When he hits the floor Kendrick smile one last time
which againt reinforces the idea he is hopeful for the future and that with time everything will be
alright.
