Support Study

Our support study class takes place 7th hour and has a total of 10 students. In
this hour, the students are to come in to their assigned seat, fill out their planner if
they havent done so throughout the day, and get started on the activity they plan
to work on that hour. Support study classes are on a pass-fail basis and each
student has the potential to receive 15 points per day: 5 for bringing and having
their planner filled out, 5 for being prepared with something to work on, and 5 for
staying on task throughout the hour. The points for bringing their planner and
bringing something to work on are designated at the beginning of class, while the
points for being on task are not received until the end of the period.
When I arrive to the class, I put the assigned work in each class on the board
for the students that may have missed it throughout the day. When the students
come into class, we first collect all of their attention and make sure they are sitting
in their assigned seats. Following this, we go through the assignments written on
the board and make sure their planners are filled out. Once everyone has started to
work on something, we can start helping students that need assistance on their
assignments, reading a test to a student, or completing another task that needs to
get done during that hour, for example, weekly grade checks.
Many of the students in our support study class are receiving special
education services under the disability area of SLD. The students are working on the
general education curriculum with various supports from the special education
teachers. These services assist the students in completing the required courses to
receive a Michigan high school diploma. The accommodations they receive include:
extended time on tests, alternate placement for tests, retakes for tests and quizzes
where below 75% was received, etc.
