Title: Its about time!


Time: 35 minutes
Teachers Name: Ms. Lamb (Mrs. LaCombes class)
Grade Level: 2nd grade
Standards (CCSS-M)
o Tell and write time from analog and digital clocks to the nearest five minutes,
using a.m. and p.m.
Learning Objectives (specific statement RE CCSS-M)
o After making clock manipulatives, the students will be able to correctly tell the
time on 6 different clocks using their model as a guide.
Assessment
o The students will complete a What Time is it? sheet as an exit ticket for the
lesson.
Materials/Resources
o Book: Telling time: how to tell time on digital and analog clocks! by Jules
Older
o Clock [model]
o Paper circles/ paper plates (2/student)
o Scissors (1/student)
o Markers (2 colors)
o Arrows (hour and minute hand/student)

(2 min.) What time did you wake up this morning?
Assess if the students use the correct language when telling time.
o Ex. I woke up at 7:00 this morning.
(2 min.) Talk about clocks

(7 min.) Read Telling time: how to tell time on digital and analog
clocks! by Jules Older
(1 min.) Show two types of clocks
Analog (clock on wall, watch, etc.)
Digital (alarm clock, etc.)
(15 min.) Make clock manipulative to help tell time
Hand out materials
Show model
o The hour hand cant reach to see over the number on top so
it tells up the number on top.
o The minute hand is nosey, so it creeps over the first number
to see what is underneath. It tells us what is underneath.

Use manipulative to model the time
o AFTER = Connections & Next Steps (Closure)

(10 min.) Give What Time is it? worksheet for the students to use with
their manipulative clocks.
Some problems will have the clock showing the arms and they will have
to decide what time the clock is showing and others will have the time and
the students will have to put on the arms. We will do two of each together.
