Systematic Observation
20161102
Overview:
On 20161102 Will conducted a volleyball lesson. Will utilized 20
polyspots and 10 volleyballs. Wills main focus for the day was on the
underhand serve and the volleyball bump pass. Wills main goal was to
get the students ready for actual game play on Friday with Freda. I
helped out Will that day. Nathans lesson focus was speedball. Nathan
utilized 8 cones, 8 pennies, and 4 soccer balls. Nathan reviewed the
rules to the game and then added a new rule to the game, to make it
more challenging to the students. Nathan also had Ren that day to help
him out with his class.
Systematic Observation: Nathan
I was unable to really observe any of Nathans lesson due to the fact
that the camera remained focused on the school building after Nathan
took his class to the other side of the court and out of view. There were
a few intermittent times where some of the students came into view of
the camera and it did look like they were actively engaged in MVPA.
The only suggestion I have is to make sure that the camera is placed in
a way that the activities can be seen. The responsibility of that
shouldnt just fall on the ET. I understand that the DT has a lot to think
about, but this is a team effort. Teamwork makes the dream work.
Systematic Observation: Will
I think that Will did a great job keeping his students interested in the
lesson. Volleyball is a pretty easy lesson to teach and most if not all of
the students can be pretty successful and participate with confidence. I
think Wills transitions were good, he had them on polyspots across
from their partner and they practiced the serve, bump, and set. Will
had them engaged in that activity until he felt that they were all being
successful. There was a period, which was out of Wills control where
the YMCA guy came and took almost all of Wills class away from him
to go on a latrine break. Will adapted to the situation and instead of
having the 4 or 5 students that remained just sitting around doing
nothing he had them continue the activity until they came back. This is
where I jumped in and participated with the students. Will had a
smooth transition to the actual volleyball courts where he had them
involved in about 5 min of actual game play. Again, they would have
had a longer time engaged in the actual game if it was not for the
interruption. As for changes I think that should not have them pick
their partners, I think that by counting them off 1-2 goes a lot faster. I
know that by even doing that the students try and position themselves

accordingly so they can be with their friends, but I still think that is a
more efficient way of getting them into their respective groups.
