Trouble In
Rodeo Paradise
by Billy Dukes

Miranda Lambert was

nearing the end of her
show at Rodeo Houston
when a fan tried to rush
the stage. He didnt get
very far before security
intervened, however.
The unidentified man
was tackled and promptly
arrested after he jumped
a fence and rushed toward Lambert. Many in
the audience didnt know
what had happened, while
others thought the concert ended prematurely.
A statement from rodeo
officials provided to
Houston news outlets like
KHOU didnt elaborate
on the mans intent,

although Click 2 Houston

reports that he may have
been trying to give her
flowers.
We confirm that yes
there was an arrest for
criminal trespassing,
due to someone entering
the arena, the statement reads. We make
announcements that no
spectators are allowed in
the arena except for chute
seat holders during the
concert.
Lambert had just finished singing Gunpowder and Lead, a song shes
used in the past to close
shows, or to wrap up a set
that precedes an encore.
Houstons Culture Map
lists 15 songs on her set
list. The only new song

Food Overdose With

The Houston Rodeo
By Jakeisha Wilmore

If there were ever a reason to eat to your hearts

content, its the annual
Houston Livestock Show
and Rodeo. Its the time of
the year when everyone
gorges on barbecue and
just about anything of the
deep-fried variety. Bonus
points are awarded for
food thats fried and on a
stick - how else can you
walk around and enjoy
all the activities without
making a mess?
The rodeo officially kicks
off Tuesday, March 3 (and
will run through Sunday,

March 22),which means

its time to start formulating a plan of attack for
this years heart-clogging,
caloric fried food fest.
Funnel cakes are a must,
as are deep-fried Twinkies
and Oreos. Check and
check. Same goes for
barbecue and enormous
turkey legs. But before
you fill your to-do-list to
the brim, save room for
new dining options from

rodeo debut.

HOUSTON SWOONS
FORLuke Bryan
Story By: Courtney Carr

Luke Bryans stop at RodeoHous

ton on Thursday night (March 10)
was a big one: The country superstar took the stage, for the fifth time
in his career, in front of a soldout crowd; with 75,082 in attendance, Bryans show became the
10th-largest ever at the rodeo.
Although Bryan has played RodeoHouston a number of times before,
he tells The Boot that the excitement never fades.
The excitement is always really at
an amazing, high level. Not many
times throughout the year do you
get the opportunity to play in front
of I dont know of any opportunity where you necessarily play
in front of 80,000 people, being
essentially on the 50-yard line of
a football field and in the center of
the rodeo, Bryan shared prior to
his set. I remember the first time I
did it. It was something that, growing up as a kid, you heard about
all the pageantry and the history of
the rodeo, and to finally get to do
it and to be selling this thing out
is a amazing. It is something that I
certainly do not take lightly.
Bryan took the stage on Thursday
night wearing jeans, a black graphic T-shirt, and a black baseball
cap. After playing a few songs, he
told the Texas audience, I want
to thank you guys. Every year, we
come out here, [and] this is one of
the most exciting shows. I want to
thank you from the bottom of my
heart for selling this place out on a

Thursday night.
When it was time for him to play
his newest single, Huntin and
Fishin and Lovin Every Day,
Bryan made sure to shout out
the hunters, fishers and lovers in
the audience. The somber smash
Drink a Beer, meanwhile, was
met with thousands of glowing
cellphones; the emotional song

Thanks for
changing my life
with
that song said
Bryan.
clearly struck a chord, as the crowd
sang along at an almost-deafening
level.
Thanks for changing my life with
that song, Bryan said.
Not having a duet partner with him
didnt stop Bryan from singing his
newest No. 1 song, Home Alone
Tonight; rather, he relied on the
audience to sing Karen Fairchilds
part. During Country Girl, the
singer got up close and personal
with concertgoers, walking around
the perimeter of the rodeos dirt
floor, giving out plenty of high
fives and showing off his dance
moves.
Fittingly, Bryan chose I Dont
Want This Night to End to close
out his show. But before he hopped

into the bed of a waiting pickup

truck, he covered the Weeknds
Cant Feel My Face.
Bryans set at RodeoHouston was a
solid indication of what makes the
artist Entertainer of the Year material. In early April, hell be competing against fellow RodeoHouston
performer Miranda Lambert, as
well as Garth Brooks, Eric Church
and another RodeoHouston
performer, Jason Aldean, for that
trophy at the 2016 ACM Awards.
Anytime you get the Entertainer nomination, it is a huge
deal, and you know you are
always going to be in there with
the best of the best, and certainly all of the other nominees are
that, Bryan says. It is always an
exciting moment of the night; the
big Entertainer portion of the show
is pretty crazy stuff.
Bryan is also co-hosting the 2016
ACM Awards with Dierks Bentley.
RodeoHouston 2016, which
runs throughout March, offers a
star-studded concert lineup, including Keith Urban, Brad Paisley and
more. Billy Currington will take
the stage on Saturday (March 12).

DERULO
DELIGHT

Get Ugly off last years Everything is 4.

Whatcha Say remains one of
Derulos best songs, both for
its anthemic feel and for the
way his voice sounds juxtaposed with Imogen Heaps Auto-tuned choruses. But Derulo
made time for both the older
hits and his newer singles,
which have become favorites of
the club scene.

Story By: Matthew Keever

Forty-five minutes into his set
at RodeoHouston Friday night,
Jason Derulo decided it was
time to stir up the crowd of
nearly 60,000 screaming fans
in attendance.
Halfway through It Girl, the
second single from 2011s
Future History, he jumped
from the stage into the dirt
and began walking toward the
barriers.
All these beautiful ladies up
in here, Derulo said, striding
slowly in no particular direction, and I was wondering if
my It Girl might be in Houston
tonight.
Thunderous applause and
shrill cheering followed, but
Derulo didnt stop there. He
Photos by: Houston Chronicle

walked half the length of the

stadium before inviting a
young woman out of the crowd
into the gravel with him, where
he sat her down and serenaded her before lifting her to her
feet for a brief dance.
The young woman in question
stole a few kisses to the cheek
as Derulo sang, following each
with an incredulous glance
toward her friends in their
seats. Unfortunately for her, it
wasnt until after she returned
to her seat that the singer took
his shirt off, further lifting the
crowds spirits and pitch.
Derulos set list was peppered
with hits from all four of his
studio albums, reaching back
to 2008s breakout single
Whatcha Say all the way to
Want You to Want Me and

He even set aside five minutes

to showcase his six backup
dancers, who strutted their
stuff as Drakes Jumpman
blared through the overhead
speakers. After all, a Jason
Derulo concert is as much
about dancing as it is about
music.
Instead of leaving the stage
in the back of a pickup truck,
waving to the crowd as is
tradition Derulo ended his
set by hopping off the stage
and onto a horse, where he
remained shirtless and donned
a black cowboy hat as he rode
through the gates backstage.
And thats how Jason Derulo,
the newcomer, conducted his
first visit to RodeoHouston.
With a style all his own.
