Lesson 4: Heterogeneous Mixture

Guide Card
Introduction

A Heterogeneous Mixture is simply any mixture that is not uniform in composition. It does not
appear to be the same throughout. It is the “least mixed” type of mixture because the particles are large
enough to be seen and may be separated from one another.
Heterogeneous mixture contains a solid and a liquid substance. This mixture can easily be
separated by setting aside the solid substance from the liquid substance. Other heterogeneous mixture is
a combination of two solid materials with different appearances like a mixture of pebbles and shells. If
you examine the combination of the two solid materials they easily identified according to their
appearances and properties.
What's the best way to eat a bag of jelly beans? Many people open the bag and eat all the candy,
no matter what flavor each piece is. Others pick through the collection. They might say "I don't like the
orange ones." Or maybe they just care for the lemon ones. There are different kinds of jelly beans in the
mixture and people will eat what they want and get rid of the rest.
Heterogeneous mixture is a mixture in which the composition is not uniform throughout the
mixture. Vegetable soup is a heterogeneous mixture. Any given spoonful of soup will contain varying
amounts of the different vegetables and other components of the soup.
A phase is any part of a sample that has a uniform composition and properties. By definition, a
pure substance or a homogeneous mixture consists of a single phase. A heterogeneous mixture consists
of two or more phases. When oil and water are combined, they do not mix evenly, but instead form two
separate layers. Each of the layers is called a phase.
In the vegetable soup example, one phase would be the liquid soup itself. This phase has
vitamins, minerals, and other components dissolved in the water. This phase would be homogeneous.
The carrots, peas, corn, or other vegetables represent other phases of the soup. The various vegetables
are not mixed evenly in the soup, but are spread around at random.
There are a large number of heterogeneous mixtures around us. Soil is composed of a variety of
substances and is often of different composition depending on the sample taken. One shovel may come
up with dirt and grass while the next shovel could contain an earthworm.
Smog is another example of a heterogeneous mixture. This murky collection of pollutants can be
a mixture of water and contaminants from burning gasoline or plastics mixed with nitric oxide
derivatives and ozone. You can see that the smog distribution in the air illustrated below is not evenly
spread out, but varies from one part of the atmosphere to another.

Lesson 5: Homogeneous Mixture and Heterogeneous Mixture

Guide Card
Introduction
A mixture is composed of two or more substances that are mixed together but not chemically
combined. They are classified to how “well-mixed” they are.
Homogeneous Mixture is a mixture that appears to be same throughout. It is “well-mixed” or
the substances are distributed evenly throughout. In solid – liquid solutions, the solid substance cannot
be easily recognized and does not settle at the bottom. Example of this is sugar dissolved in water they
appear to be as one.
Heterogeneous Mixture is a mixture that does not appear to be the same throughout. It is the
“least-mixed” type of mixture because the particles are large enough to be seen and may be separated
from one another. Example of this is in solid-liquid mixture is water and monggo seeds. The mixture is
easily separated by letting the monggo seeds settle at the bottom and you can easily pour the water to the
other container. Mixing oil and soy sauce forms up liquid-liquid heterogeneous mixture. When oil and
soy sauce are shaken well, drops of oil will spread throughout the soy sauce. If you will allow the
mixture to settle the substance will separate.

Mini Lesson/Science Concept

 A mixture is formed by combining two or more materials.
 A homogeneous mixture appears uniform, regardless of where you sample it. A heterogeneous
mixture contains particles of different shapes or sizes and the composition of one sample may
differ from that of another sample.
 Whether a mixture is heterogeneous or homogeneous depends on how closely you examine it.
Sand may appear homogeneous from a distance, yet when you magnify it, it is heterogeneous.
 Examples of homogeneous mixtures include air, saline solution, most alloys, and bitumen.
 Examples of heterogeneous mixtures include sand, oil and water, and chicken noodle soup.

Homogeneous Mixtures
Homogeneous mixtures appear uniform to the eye. They consist of a single phase, be it liquid,
gas, or solid, no matter where you sample them or how closely you examine them. The chemical
composition is the same for any sample of the mixture.
Heterogeneous Mixtures
Heterogeneous mixtures are not uniform. If you take two samples from different parts of the
mixture, they will not have an identical composition. You can use a mechanical method to separate

12
components of a heterogeneous mixture (e.g., sorting candies in a bowl).
Sometimes these mixtures are obvious, where you can see different types of materials in a
sample. For example, if you have a salad, you can see different sizes and shapes and types of vegetables.
In other cases, you need to look more closely to recognize this mixture. Any mixture that contains more
than one phase of matter is a heterogeneous mixture.
This can be tricky because a change of conditions can alter a mixture. For example, an unopened
soda in a bottle has a uniform composition and is a homogeneous mixture. Once you open the bottle,
bubbles appear in the liquid. The bubbles from carbonation are gasses, while the majority of the soda is
liquid. An opened can of soda is an example of a heterogeneous mixture.
Examples of Mixtures
1. Air is a homogeneous mixture. However, the Earth's atmosphere as a whole is a heterogeneous
mixture. See the clouds? That's evidence the composition is not uniform.
2. Alloys are made when two or more metals are mixed together. They usually are homogeneous
mixtures. Examples include brass, bronze, steel, and sterling silver. Sometimes multiple phases
exist in alloys. In these cases, they are heterogeneous mixtures. The two types of mixtures are
distinguished by the size of the crystals that are present.
3. Mixing together two solids, without melting them together, typically results in a heterogeneous
mixture. Examples include sand and sugar, salt and gravel, a basket of produce, and a toy box
filled with toys.
4. Mixtures in two or more phases are heterogeneous mixtures. Examples include ice cubes in a
drink, sand and water, and salt and oil.
5. The liquid that is immiscible form heterogeneous mixtures. A good example is a mixture of oil
and water.
6. Chemical solutions are usually homogeneous mixtures. The exception would be solutions that
contain another phase of matter. For example, you can make a homogeneous solution of sugar
and water, but if there are crystals in the solution, it becomes a heterogeneous mixture.
7. Many common chemicals are homogeneous mixtures. Examples include vodka, vinegar, and
dishwashing liquid.
8. Many familiar items are heterogeneous mixtures. Examples include orange juice with pulp and
chicken noodle soup.
9. Some mixtures that appear homogeneous at first glance are heterogeneous upon closer
inspection. Examples include blood, soil, and sand.
10. A homogeneous mixture can be a component of a heterogeneous mixture. For
example, bitumen (a homogeneous mixture) is a component of asphalt (a heterogeneous
mixture).
Not a Mixture
Technically, if a chemical reaction is occurring when you mix two materials, it's not a mixture...
at least not until it has finished reacting.
 If you mix baking soda and vinegar, a chemical reaction occurs. Once the reaction has finished,
the remaining material is a mixture.
 If you mix together ingredients to bake a cake, a chemical reaction occurs between the
ingredients. While we use the term "mixture" in cooking, it doesn't always mean the same thing
as the chemistry definition.

Review: What’s In
In the previous module, you’ve learned that mixture is formed by combination of two substances
that either well-mixed together or least-mixed. You found out that a homogeneous mixture is one
whose components are evenly distributed throughout the mixture. It is known as a single-phase mixture
because only one phase is present.
A homogeneous mixture is also known as a solution. You may remember that phase refers to that
part of a mixture that is physically distinct. That part may be in the solid, liquid or gaseous state. An
alloy is a homogeneous mixture. It is a solid solution of two or more metallic substances. Air is a
homogeneous mixture of gases. It is composed mainly of nitrogen and oxygen. Rubbing alcohol is also a
homogeneous mixture of isopropyl alcohol and water. It is a liquid solution.

Discussion of Activity

Components of a Solution

The substances that make up a homogeneous solution are called components of the
solution. It has basically two components: solvent and solute.

 Solvent: The component of a solution which dissolves the other component in itself is
called solvent. A solvent constitutes the larger component of the solution. For example, a
solution of sugar in water is solid in the liquid. Here, sugar is the solute and water is the
solvent.
 Solute: The component of the solution which dissolves in the solvent is called solute.
The solute is the smaller component of the solution. For example, a solution of sugar in
water, the sugar is the solute. Similarly, in carbonated drinks (Soda water), carbon
dioxide gas is the solute.
