LIQUIDS WITH OTHER LIQUIDS

oil

A DepEd-BEAM Distance Learning Program supported by the Australian Agency for International Development
To the Learner

Materials can be in solid, liquid or gaseous state. Materials

in any state may combine and form a mixture.

This module shows what happens to some liquids when

mixed with water.

Let’s Learn This

Describing what happens after mixing liquids with other liquids.

Let’s Try This

Draw a happy face if the statement is true and sad

face if the statement is false.

1. All liquid when mixed with liquid dissolve completely.

2. Some liquid when mixed with water makes the water

cloudy.
3. Not all liquid mixed with water makes the water cloudy.

4. Other liquid mixed with water forms 2 or more layers.

5. Alcohol mixed with water cannot be seen anymore.

75
Let’s Study This

Follow the procedures below and write your result on the

table.
Observe whether the water after mixing becomes cloudy,
formed layers or cannot be distinguished anymore.

Procedures:
1. Prepare 6 transparent glasses or empty jars.
2. Label each glass. (ex. Glass A, B, C, D, E and F)
A
3. Half fill each glass with water.
4. Add 2 tablespoons of alcohol in glass A and stir. Leave it for 3
minutes.
5. Add 2 tablespoons of kerosene in glass B and stir. Leave it for
3 minutes.
6. Add 2 tablespoons of crude oil in glass C and stir. Leave it for
3 minutes.
7. Add 2 tablespoons of cooking oil in glass D and stir. Leave it
for 3 minutes.
8. Add 2 tablespoons of evaporated milk in glass E and stir. Leave
it for 3 minutes.
9. Add 2 tablespoons of tuba in glass F and stir. Leave it for 3
minutes.
10. Observe all the glasses and record your observations on the
table.

LIQUID GLASS Result

1. water and alcohol
A
2. water and kerosene
B
3. water and crude oil
C
4. water and cooking oil

Let’s Do This

A. Write the following signs before then number that described

the result.

cannot be distinguished from each other

become cloudy

formed 2 or more layers.

1. water and crude oil

2. water and coco milk

3. water and alcohol

4. water and kerosene

5. water and cooking oil

Let’s Remember This

Some liquids when mixed with water cannot be

distinguished anymore.
Other liquids when mixed with water make the water
cloudy.
Other liquids when mixed with water formed 2 or more
layers.
Water is considered universal solvent because it can
dissolve many substances.

Let’s Do More

Describe what will happen to the different liquids when

mixed with water. Write become cloudy, formed 2 or more
layers, cannot be distinguished from each other on the blank
below the picture.

1. soy sauce 2. soft drinks 3. alcohol

oil

4. cooking oil 5. gasoline 6. vinegar

7. orange juice 8. evaporated milk 9. kerosene

10. used oil

Let’s Test Ourselves

Write True if the statement is correct and False if it is not.

1. Water mixed with alcohol cannot be distinguished

anymore.

2. Not all liquids mixed with water make the water cloudy.

3. All liquids mixed with water dissolve completely.

4. Some liquids like oil and crude oil mixed with water
form 2 or more layers.

5. Other liquids like coco milk mixed with water make the
water cloudy.

Assignment:

1. List down 5 examples of liquid mixtures.

2. Find out why sea water are called homogenous mixture?

Check your answer with the answer key.

Congratulations!
You may proceed to the next module.

Science Fact File

emulsion – a liquid mixture wherein two do not completely

dissolve in each other. Emulsions are not
permanent. The liquids separate from each other
after a certain time, examples are hand lotions,
lubricants, medicines and paints. Oil and water from
