URI News Release

For Immediate Release
Sept. 22, 2016
URI students to give BIG to local nonprofits
Kingston, R. I. - Not only do URI students think big, but they will give big, too. During
Community Impact Week October 3-7, the students from the public relation program will
be restocking shelves at the Rhody Outpost which is the emergency food pantry on the
URI campus.
A goal of the public relations program at URI is to challenge students to contribute to the
success of the world by immersing themselves in initiatives with local and global impact.
To meet this goal the public relations faculty came up with an idea to hold Community
Impact Week where students in the pr program would volunteer at local Charities. The
students will volunteer at the Rhody Outpost. Public relations students will be stocking
shelves, unpacking boxes of food, putting together small bags of food, preparing
grocery bags for students, doing whatever is needed.
Other department chairs at the university taken note of Community Impact Week and
have praised the public relations programs efforts. According to Communication Studies
Department Chair Dr. Kevin McClure this is a great opportunity for our public relations
students to share their time, talents and knowledge with worthy, local nonprofits.
While the majority of the students at URI who live on campus have meal plans, some do
not. The Rhody Outpost is an emergency food pantry for students at URI who are
unable to afford either a meal plan or buy groceries.
The URI public relations program is part of the Harrington School of
Communication and Media. The PR program is made up of over 200 students who
ambitious, creative and driven to succeed. The PR program is constantly evolving
to meet the competitive demands of the global market place. In the PR program
students develop critical skills that focus on critical thinking, strategic
communication and effective writing; all necessary for meeting the demands of
this competitive career path.
