The Old Tappan Zee

The Tappan Zee Bridge began construction in

March of 1952 and ended in December of 1955
Built across the Hudson River in hopes of creating
a new way of transportation for the growing
population of New York
Unique because it is held up using Caissons,
keeping the working environment dry
Only 7 lanes
Nearly 3 miles long (4.8 km)
Cantilever bridge

The New Tappan Zee

Dual-Span Twin bridge

Began in 2013 and estimated to end in
2018
Costing $3.98 billion dollars
4 Vehicle lanes, on each span (8 lanes
total) and a pedestrian/bicycle path

Tappan Zee
Construction

Why build a new bridge?

The Tappan Zee was made to help reduce traffic in New York
The project proved successful, however it has now grown to transport 138,000
vehicles a day
The bridge was not built to support the amount of weight that it now carries
Has a high car accident rate because of traffic combined with narrow lanes

Why is rebuilding the Tappan Zee a

problem?

It will cost nearly 4 billion dollars to rebuild which is coming out of taxpayers
paychecks
New construction means a lot of dust adding to pollution and angering people who
live close to the bridge
New bridge will have higher tolls

Where should we draw the line?

Current pollution prevention on the Hudson River isnt up to code with federal
permit requirements meaning even more pollution in our rivers
Dredging will affect life on the riverbed
Building of a new bridge will be loud, disturbing any organisms near the
construction site

The benefits of building a new bridge

Less frustration for motorists

Emergency lanes
More lanes in general
People who walk or take bicycles for transportation
will enjoy a 12-foot wide path
It will open job opportunities
