KOSOVOS MOTIFS IN THE PLAYS BY MATIJA BAN:

ON THE BORDERS OF FOLK LITERATURE,
RELIGION AND POLITICS
Summary
Starting from the literary views of Matija Ban, we will prove that
Kosovos motifs in his dramatic works exist only in the genre of tragedy. The
central part of the paper is the analysis of Bans treatment of Kosovos motifs
betrayal, fratricide, treason, Lazars dinner, curses, oaths and heroism, in which
we observe that the central figure of the Battle of Kosovo becomes Lazar, and
that policy was given superiority over religion and epic heroism. In the final
part of the paper we found the cause of the politicization of Kosovos motifs
and lack of the kingdom of heaven. Then the paper points out the role and
importance of Bans Kosovos trilogy in the rich artistic tradition dealing with
the theme of the Battle of Kosovo.
