Department for the Sound Design

Sound, as a physical phenomenon, represents a very subjective and abstract term.

It can be used in so many different ways. When you choose to study at the
Department for the Sound Design, you open the doors to that amazing versatility.
One of the reasons sound is so interesting is the fact that it enables a specific kind
of manipulation. Someone can even compare it to a film as it seems to appear
susceptible to our various interpretations. Much like the film engages our mind in
thinking process, so does the sound try to manipulate our consciousness. A specific
sound design is something that can make you feel sad, happy or aggressive even. In
film, it presents a certain take on an emotion rollercoaster, as the sound effects
create a false sense of environment the listeners participate in while being given
information in the form of a dialogue.
Today, sound designer is a person who serves as an intermediary between art and
science. Sound department is one of the most complex sectors nowadays, and
includes many professionals dealing with technical and engineering issues. Sound
designers have now come to the point where they can create artistic forms using
scientific basis, thus presenting something new and unheard of. Students willing to
study at this particular department of the Faculty of Dramatic Arts should be
musical, but in no way obliged to play a certain instrument. What they need is
persistence, clear perspective and skillfulness, as they have to form themselves to
be more than mere technicians. They will learn through continuous semesters the
importance of different art forms in building their own point of view. Although their
career doesnt necessarily depend on the knowledge gained in such fields like
camera work and editing or history of theatre and film, it sure will help develop a
competent opinion on matters concerning this area of expertise.
And though the majority of sound work today is done by special digital audio
interface, the students embarking on this journey will be familiarized with how the
analog era functioned, because everything in todays technology is based on the
analog foundations, as sound is an analog form, in its origin. Of course, like all
young minds ready to soak up the knowledge, students are expected to be
dedicated to their work on projects in all kinds of media environments theatre,
radio, film or television. To help them with the daily tasks, students are able to use
various facilities, like drama or radio studio.
As they near the end of their sound design learning process, students are capable of
discussing and/or improving the music and film industry and so much more. The
program prepares them for any working environment that contains sound as the
unit of information. They further explore their creative nature, and become the
leaders in this field of art, making great contributions, searching for new ways of
improvement and enjoying the everlasting re-invention of the new technology.
