THE WITCHES WALK 2016

We are having our
Witches Walk on the
27th of October
2016. First, we will
come to school in
fantastic costumes
like witches and dead
school girls. We
might do a little
work, then head off
on the Witches
Walk. We leave
school, baskets in
hand, in pairs. Some
parents watch at the
gate. We walk into
town and go on our
mini trick or treat!!

The shop keepers

and some mums and
dads hang around and
drop some sweets
into our baskets. Its
small break by the
time we are finished.
We have our lunch
and of course eat our
sweets! When we are
in the yard it is like a
Halloween show! So
many costumes! Imagine how the Junior
Infants feel!! For the
rest of the day we
watch movies, play
games, sing songs and

of course eat candy!!

Its so sad when the
day is over, but it is
such fun!

A FEW WORDS FROM MR. ONEILL

Dear Parents/Guardians,
As the nights are drawing in and
the weather has a definite Autumn
feel to it, growing colder and the
leaves turning colour and falling to
the ground, we know Halloween can
not be too far away. I urge all the
boys and girls to dress warmly, to
bring in coats and to put them on!
As the temperature is very changeable at this time of year it is easy
for the children to pick up colds
and spread them in the school.
September is always a busy month
in the school and a lot of the
groundwork is established during
that month. We are delighted with
the football campaigns, which were
held up until last week. Though we
did not qualify for any final in the
football both teams did exceptionally well and played with real spirit
and determination. We have the
hurling and camige to look forward
to next year and you never know!
Well done also to everyone involved
with the Cross Country running held
recently in Castlelyons. I would like
to thank all the boys and girls involved in the teams for their good
sportsmanship and always being so
good when they represent the
school. They are a credit to their

parents and teachers. I would also

like to thank our teachers who
coach the children and all the staff
who help with supervision when
class teachers are away at matches.
Sixth class have already had a number of outings and they enjoyed an
early music recital in Saint Marys
Collegiate Church and a tour of
Youghal. Rang a d, Ms. Coynes
class, took part in a workshop in
the library here in Youghal and this
week we were collecting application
cards and giving out membership
cards for your children to join the
Library in Youghal. Membership is
now free so I would encourage all
the boys and girls to use the facilities here in Youghal and to start
and continue a life long love of
books and reading.
There is a new Parents Association
now in the school with all the officers elected on the 28th of September last. I wish them all the best
for the coming year and I thank all
the parents in the school for all the
support that they give to each and
every school event. Thank you to
the parents, who have once again,
started cookery classes in the
school and also a thank you to the

SNAs who are giving after school

classes as well.
There is a homework class after
starting run by Rapid and Cumann
na nDaoine. It is held for two hours
every Monday to Thursday in Nagle
House.
We have our major fundraiser coming up now very soon. The Witches
Walk will take place on Thursday
27th of October. Fingers crossed
that the weather will be good on
the day. The funds raised on the
day will go towards the purchase of
a class set of iPads and a charging
trolley. The Board of Management
will be also contributing towards
this purchase. It is a costly outlay
but as we now have wifi throughout
the school this is the way to go.
The computers in the Computer
Room are becoming obsolete and in
need of replacement but the cost
involved in that is very high and
only a short term fix. We are excited about the purchasing of the
iPads and the children will really
benefit from your generosity. Many
thanks to Mrs. Leamy for organising this annual event, which is a
highlight for a lot of our children
and also a lot of not so young children!

PARENTS ASSOCIATION NEWS

Bunscoil Mhuire Parents Association have been hard at

work teaching the children in
Fifth class how to cook. The
children will all have the
chance to cook and will make
goodies such as scrambled
eggs on toast, scones, curry
and much more! The Witch-

Page 2

es Walk will take place on

Thursday. The children
dress up and walk down town
in their costumes. The children have collected a lot of
money already for the school
from the very kind townspeople who sponsored them.
Many of the businesses in

town are also out with lots

of sweets and candy to give
to the children on their walk!
Thank you to
everyone
who gave
money, time
or sweets!

CHARLIE OBRIEN GOLF SUCCESS

Twelve months ago I became a member of Youghal Golf Club. We have

two tournaments every week during
the summer; one on Tuesday and one
on Thursday. Liam Burns is in charge
of the Junior Tournaments. On the
3rd of July gone, the Junior Munster Masters came to Youghal Golf
Club. The weather on the day was
very sunny and there was very little
wind. At the end of my fifteen holes
I hit seventy shots and came second.
On the second last week of the summer holidays the final day of the
Irish Junior Masters was in Fernhill
Golf Club which is just outside Carrigaline. My caddy was my dad. The
weather on the day was very bad;

there was a lot of rain and wind.

There was also some thunder towards the end of my round. The participants were from all across Ireland and anyone in the eleven and
under category had to have an adult
caddy. On the way up to the first
tee box I was very nervous but as
soon as I hit my first couple of
shots I calmed down a bit. It also
improved my game to have my dad
going around with me giving me advice and help. We played fifteen
holes again, the same as the Munster
Masters. With the weather I didnt
play as well as the previous tournament and I hit seventy two shots.
When we came in from our round we

got a chance to dry off and get

something to eat in the bar. We had
to wait about thirty minutes for the
results to be announced and it was
then I found out that I came first in
my category. Overall I think the day
was great and it was an exciting experience. Im looking forward to
next year already.

VERY EXCITING TIMES FOR JUNIOR INFANTS!

We love school. Our teachers
are Ms. OLeary and Ms.
Kearney. We have made lots of
new friends. Our favourite
thing about school is playing, we
have lots of toys in our class.
We have started doing Aistear.
Its so much fun. This week in
Aistear we are learning all

about Autumn and animals that

hibernate. We even went on a
nature walk to the garden and
saw all the lovely autumn leaves.

In class we like when we sing

our songs and when we listen to
stories. In a few weeks we will
all be dressing up and going on a
Witches Walk for Halloween.
We are so excited.

LEAVE NOTHING BUT FOOTSTEPS ON OUR BEACHES!

This September Sixth class took part in
the beach clean up in Claycastle. We
prepared to leave for Claycastle. Finally
we got to the beach. We were split into
groups. Each person got a job and those
jobs were for leaders who would guide
the group, the bag holders and the person who ticked off all the things we
found and there were the people that
would try to find the rubbish. We recorded the list of things that we had
found and here is an idea of what we

VOLUME 11, ISSUE 1

found on the beach; tea bags, ear buds,

old toys and cigarette butts. After we
had completed our good deed for the
day we were allowed to take out our
lunch and shortly after that our teachers rewarded us by letting us go out and
play some games such as Bulldog, Manhunt, Catch and some people played in
the sand. After having a great day at
the beach we sadly had to leave and walk
back to school for a short period of
work. It was a great day! Doing the

beach clean was the way we gave back to

our community. We encourage you to
stop and do this two minute beach clean
to give back to your own community and
remember leave nothing but footsteps!

CYBER BULLYING IS JUST WRONG

Recently everybody from Third

to Sixth classes had a talk
about cyber bullying with Ger.
It was very interesting. The
two things he told us that we
are never to share with anyone
else ever are our passwords or
our toothbrushes. Ger showed
us how to screenshot on Snapchat. Ger showed us a video
about a boy named Joe. He was
getting cyber bullied by people
and he thought they were his
friends. He made a video about
how he felt and didnt show it

to anyone at all. There was also

another video about a girl
named Becky. Becky posted a
lot of information about herself online. That is never a good
idea.
Here are some very important
rules to stick to when going
online:

1.

Never put personal information online.

2.

Think before you post.

3.

Do not accept friend requests from strangers.

4.

Never share your password with anyone except

your parents.

A TOUGH GROUP FOR THE LADS!

This year the boys had a really

tough group, probably one of the
toughest in Cork. We won our first
match and then we were unlucky to
lose the rest. We came up short in a
play off against Cobh. They won in
the last minute of the game by a
goal. Everybody had a great game.
We played our hearts out and we did
everybody proud but we were just
unlucky. We trained every Monday

and the training paid off for the

first match but we needed a bit
more training for the rest. Our captain was Conor OShea. He was a
great captain. Mr. Hickey, Mr. White
and Johnny were training us every
week. Charlie Flavin had a great
game in every game. He was superb.
We rocked as well! Zdenek kept
heading the ball, he is good at it!
The players are all from Fifth and

Sixth classes, too many to mention!

Next year we hope we can double
that and make a semi final if not the
final!

A GREAT TWO DAYS OF NEW MUSIC!

On Wednesday the 21st of September the

three Sixth classes; Ms. Edmonds, Ms.
Hurneys and Mr. Conways went uptown to
Saint Marys Collegiate Church to listen to
1700-1800 Baroque music. It wasnt the
modern music we listen to but it didnt
stop us from liking it. We left at 12:50 and
got there at 1 oclock. When I was walking
with Charlie my friends were behind us;
Donacha and Bradley. We were talking
about games and such down the road.
When we arrived, there were two people; a
man and a woman holding the curtains back
for us to go in. Then we sat on benches
and three young girls sat down and
grabbed their instruments. The girls
names were Emer, Manu and Claude. They
each played Baroque on cello, a recorder
and a harpsichord. They played three different styles of Baroque music such as
German, French and Irish. They played

about four to five sets. They were inspired by Turloch OHurlann. After an
hour they had finished playing their music.
We went back to school. We were so tired
after listening to the lovely music. The
next day the teachers said we were going
back as it was our last chance to listen to
them play music. When we got there at
the very start they were talking to us
about all the instruments. Then they
played two sets of music. They played two
sets of Irish. Then we were all split up
into groups and we started off with the
recorder, then the harpsichord then the
cello. Most people liked the recorder.
Then we went back into the main room and
listened to another two sets of Irish music. While we were listening out of nowhere Manu started playing two recorders
at once. It was really cool. Towards the
end Claude played the Mr. Bean song and

everyone had to get up and dance. Then we

went out to the other room and there
were tables full of hot chocolate and
marshmallows everywhere. In the meantime we had our lunch but we were already
full of chocolate. After that we went out
and we had a tour of the town walls. We
went back to the Church and the tour
guides gave us no homework!!!! It was a
great experience and we would love to do
it again!

START SAVING WITH SAMMY STAMPS!

On every single Thursday

Mrs. Carroll's class do Sammy Stamps. We collect money from every class and then
they get stamps. Then every
stamp costs one Euro. Then
when the person collects
twenty stamps in their Sam-

my Stamp book they give

them to the Credit Union to
save which is a great way to
save money. You can save for
lots of things. You can save
money for Christmas to get

JUNIOR INFANTS LEARN ALL ABOUT JOLLY PHONICS

We learn lots of different
sounds in our school. We
have songs and we have actions to help us learn the
new sounds. We learn two
new sounds every week and
we even have sounds to learn
for homework. When we
know our sounds we will be

learned how to stretch some
words so that we can read
them. We are really good at

HALLOWEEN CELEBRATIONS IN ROMANIA

Halloween is celebrated in Romania, especially in the region
of Transylvania where there is
castle called Bran Castle. This
is where the idea for Bram
Stokers Dracula is thought to
come from! Over the years,
many tourists travel to Transylvania to celebrate Halloween

VOLUME 11, ISSUE 1

with costume parties, storytelling, and actors playing out

Dracula inspired scenes. While
some Romanians observe Halloween on October 31, St. Andrews Night (November 30) is
when the garlic is brought out
as a form of protection against
ghosts a traditional supersti-

tious act of fun that is still

practiced today. We all know
there are no such thing as
ghosts!!!
Its all a
bit of
fun in
