CEE 143 Design of Prestressed Concrete

University of California at Los Angeles

Spring 2015
Bondy
Homework #4 (Due May 5th)
Problem #1

Given: Unfactored Service Loads w

dead = 1.0 klf (includes bm wt.)
live = 0.3 klf
Tendons are bonded (low relaxation)
As(#6) = 0.44 in2 / bar

fc = 4,000 psi
fpu = 270 ksi
fy = 60 ksi
= 0.9 (Verify)
Aps = 0.153 in2/strand

Find:
a) Calculate the required ultimate design moment at midspan (the demand
moment). (1 pt)
b) Calculate the maximum useable flexural strength at midspan (Mn, the
capacity). (2 pts)
c) Does the beam satisfy the code strength requirements at this point for the
given loading? (1 pt)
d) Repeat a) through c) for the location 15-0 from the left support. (3 pts)

Problem #2

For the beam shown above (same beam as in H.W. #3) calculate the secondary reactions,
secondary shear diagram and secondary moment moment diagram. (3 pts)

Homework #4 Solutions Summary 2015
