Some Advice for MATH1712 Test 1 2013

Be able to
solve equations or inequalities involving absolute value, and illustrate
your solutions on a number line,
find composite functions (fog) and inverse functions,
find the amplitude and period of a sinusoidal (sin or cos) function, and
sketch the graph of such a function,
be able to find the exact value of sin(t), cos(t), or tan(t) for angles such
as /4, /2, -3/4, 5/4, -/6, /3, 2/3, 5/6, which relate to either the
454590 triangle or the 306090triangle,
find the derivatives of functions as discussed in LSM Weeks 2 and 3,
using relevant rules,
describe in words what a mathematical statement about the value of a
derivative tells us,
solve simple equations to find where a (first) derivative of a function
is zero,
find the equation of a tangent line to a curve at a point,
solve a related rates problem,
draw a sign diagram of the first derivative of a function and use it to
show the basic shape of the graph of the function.
The following formulas will be provided (and possibly others, in the relevant
questions):
