Grandad moved to the small town near the coast when he was nine years old. The town used to have more cinemas and small shops in the center, but many closed when two big supermarkets opened in the 1980s. Grandad lost his job at a local shoe shop due to this. There were once just fields and a few houses by the river where Grandad would go fishing, but now the river is polluted without any fish. While the new motorway built six years ago is noisy, the improved bus service, library, and hospital are positives for Grandad today.

My town by Javi Romero I live in a small town near the coast. My grandad moved here when he was nine and he says the town used to be very different. There used to be three cinemas, but now theres only one. Also, there used to be more small shops in the centre of town. A lot of them closed when the two big supermarkets opened in the 1980s. Grandad lost his job in a local shoe shop because of this. When he was growing up, there werent any factories by the river. There were fields with just a few houses, and he often used to go fishing in the river at the weekend. Thats difficult to imagine now. The water is filthy and there certainly arent any fish there. The big motorway is new too they finished building that six years ago. Grandad doesnt like it he says its too noisy. But he agrees that there are some positive differences. Theres a very good bus service round the town now, and that means that Grandad can visit us easily. He also says that the library and the hospital are a lot better than they used to be, and he was pleased when the town got recycling bins a few years ago. 1 How old was Grandad when he came to Javis town? ___________________________________ 2 Where did there use to be more shops? ___________________________________ 3 Where was Grandad working when the supermarkets opened? ___________________________________ 4 What bad thing happened to him? ___________________________________ 5 What buildings did there use to be by the river? ___________________________________
