I hope to see you there

Session 6

Look at the pictures. What do you think the text is about?

"Fish and chips" is a popular take-away food originally from the United Kingdom, but also
very popular in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa and some coastal
towns of the Netherlands and Norway. It is also increasing in popularity in the United
States. For decades it was the dominant take-away food in the United Kingdom.

The fried potatoes are called chips in British while American English calls them French
fries. Potato chips, an American innovation, are a different potato-derived food (called
crisps in the United Kingdom.)

People were eating Fish and chips separately for many years – people in Europe will not
know the potato until the 17th century. The Spanish and Portuguese will introduce the
potato in Netherlands and England in the 17th and 18th centuries.

The dish became popular in some areas in London in the middle of the 19th century
(Charles Dickens mentions a "fried fish warehouse" in Oliver Twist) and in the north of
England a trade in deep-fried "chipped" potatoes developed. The first combined fish and
chip shop was probably the one opened in London by Joseph Malin in 1860.

During World War II, fish and chips were one of the few foods that were not rationed in
the UK.

Are the sentences are true or false? Correct the false ones.

1. Fish and chips are popular only in England.

2. Americans call "French fries" what British call "chips".
3. Americans call "chips" what British call "crisps".
4. The dish became popular in the 19th century.
5. The first fish and chip shop was opened in the 19th century.
6. People didn’t eat Fish and chips during World War II.

Think about it…

Which is the most popular take-away food in your area? Do you usually eat take-
away food? Which are the advantages and disadvantages?

FOOD FESTIVALS
HI MUM, HI DAD
I’m having a fantastic time in Spain. Carmen and her family are very friendly
and there are many places to visit here and many things to do. Food is delicious!
Carmen wants to take me to some food festivals in Andalusia.
On 14th May, I’m going to visit Villafranca, near Cordoba. Every year they have a great party
night before the feast of San Isidoro. The party is called the “Gran Huevada” because they
fry more than 10,000 eggs. There is also lots of bread and wine, and everything is free.
In June, I’m going to go to the “Día del Pescaito” in la Carihuela, near Torremolinos in Málaga.
Every year, the restaurants there give away thousands of kilos of free fried fish! It’s a big
street party, and more than 35,000 people usually go!
The first weekend of July, I’m going to visit Serón, in Almeria, for the “Feria del Jamón”. This
fair started as a small local festival, but now thousands of people come every year. The fair
takes place in the main square town, and you can try different kinds of ham, sausage and
other delicious cured meats.
I promise I will send you some pictures.
Give my regards to granddad and grandma. I look forward to seeing you soon.
Love to all,
Sarah
