Lesson
Students will be arranged into small-groups of 4-5. The groups will be sitting
together at a group of desk. There will 7 groups all together.
At each group of desks, there will be a folder with a short text inside. Each
student will be given a graphic organizer (attached).
Together with their group, students will read each article and answer the
following questions for each article on their graphic organizer.
Are thoughts and feelings used in the text?
Is the text fictional or nonfiction?
Does the author specifically tell you their intention? If so, provide the
quote.
What is the purpose of this article?
After about 7 minutes, the students will be told to move to the next table,
where they will begin looking at the next article.
Once all groups have visited all of the articles, they will come up with a
comprehensive list of the characteristics for each type of authors purpose,
based on what they learned from the articles. As an entire class, the teacher
and students will discuss their findings to correct any misunderstandings.
