How many times has someone caught you off guard and asked you to

perform something right on the spur of the moment. Here is an old classic,
with a little twist, that still packs a powerful punch.
You begin by asking a willing participant if you could borrow their ring for a
moment. You then proceed to secure their ring on to your combination lock.
Next, you ask you do know the combination right. They hesitate as they
might be a little confused and respond with NO, to which you reply sure
you do. After they enter their personal numbers, the lock opens.
SETUP-all this one requires is a cheap four digit combination lock found at
your local dollar store, hardware store, Wal-mart etc.
Set the lock to double the current year (2016 = 4032).

SECRET-this effect is practically self-working, just follow the steps and

take your applause. I prefer this to the 1665 force, as this uses their personal
numbers, that you never have to see. With a slight alternate handling *, you
can perform this OVER THE PHONE, on radio talk shows, etc.
1) ask to borrow a ring and secure it to your lock.
2) Have them enter a few numbers and try an open the lock.
3) Have them take out THEIR CELL PHONE and launch the
CALCULATOR APP.
4) They enter the YEAR they were born and tap PLUS
5) They enter ANY IMPORTANT YEAR that stands out (year they
graduated, got married/divorced, year they started work or retired from
work, year they lost their virginity, etc) and tap PLUS

6) They enter their current age as of December 31, 2016 and tap PLUS
7) Finally, enter how many years have passed since that significant year
(from # 5) and tap EQUALS.
Keep in mind you never see or touch THEIR phone, nor do you need to
know any of their numbers. The total will always be TWICE the
CURRENT year (4032). By rearranging the sequence of the numerical
input, you disguise the mathematical properties. Trust me, this flies by a lot
of people and is always ready when you are.
You may elect to use a * verbal reveal and name each digit step by step, but
I think the combination lock adds a nice touch.
REPEATING THIS EFFECT-unfortunately this is a one trick pony. Better
off to transition into another effect, rather than to expose the secret.
TIP-if they have not celebrated their birthday yet, make sure to emphasize
age as of the end of the current year, or how old the will be by Dec. 31.
-if you are doing a verbal reveal you could omit the previous criteria and end
up with a total of 4031. Use this info by saying something similar to I
am sensing your birthday is coming up. and then proceed to reveal their
personal number.
ALTERNATE HANDLING-you could start out by flashing the word SHOE
on the back of a clipboard. Show them you have a prediction inside an
envelope. Continue with the effect and asking if everything seemed fair, and
reveal your prediction. Now re-arrange the letters in the word SHOE to
indicate they have in fact been influenced.

-for this handling, simply write the word Shoe on a TRANSPARENT plastic

sheet and cut out the letters. Place the letters on the back of your clipboard
or leave them out, giving them no attention.
-After you reveal your prediction matched their personal number, ask them if
they felt influence at all. End the effect by casually rearranging the letters to
form 4032.

Obviously the 4032 shoe handling would only work for the year 2016, you
could perform it in a different year, but you would have to subtract one year;
(how old they were LAST YEAR).
