Womens Roles
The number of working women increased
by 75% in the 20s
Most women were still housewives and
most men still had more freedom
Roles of 1920's women in the workplace
included factory workers, secretaries,
salesclerks and telephone operators. The
number of women attending college rose to
10% of the population by the end of the
1920's

New appliances and devices became available
to many people in the 1920's. Things such as
new cookers, electric irons, refrigerators,
washing machines, and vacuum cleaners.
This gave women more time for leisure and
time to relax. Luxury items such as radios and
phonographs also became available
The number of divorce doubled because
women were no-longer satisfied with staying
home and refused to continue putting up with
bad husbands.

19th Amendment
- On August 18, 1920 the 19th Amendment granted all women the right to vote.
- In the summer of 1776 the Declaration of Independence declared that all men
were created equal, but did not say anything about the equality of women
- It took 144 years after that for the US Constitution to be amended, giving women
the right to vote.
- The campaign for womens right began in 1848, organized by Elizabeth Cady
Stanton

19th Amendment
- In 1878 the Amendment was introduced to Congress and was considered in 1887.
- In 1918, President Woodrow Wilson changed the mind and backed the
Amendment
- The next year, both houses of Congress voted the ammend the Constitution and
the voted became tied, 48-48
- There were two roll call, and nothing changed
- By the 3rd roll call, one man, Harry T. Burn changed his mind, after receiving a
letter from his mom.
- It wasnt until 1965 that black women (and men) had the right to vote and in 1980,
the number of women voter in the election was higher than that of men, and since
then, there had also been a huge rise in the number of women holding and running
for political office.
