Cloverly Elementary School 800 Briggs Chaney Road Silver Spring, Maryland 20905 Phone: 301-989-5770 Fax: 301-879-1035, ‘ScHoos, Ofice of the Principal November 17, 2016 Dear Parents and Guardians: 1 am writing to provide an update regarding John Vigna, a former Cloverly Elementary School teacher ‘The Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) has arrested Mr. Vigna on two counts of sexual abuse of a minor, three counts of 3rd degree sexual offense, and one count of Child Abuse Molestation Exploitation. These counts are in addition to the charges that led to his previous arrest on June 27, 2016. According to police, the new charges stem from inappropriate behavior with three students that Mr. Vigna taught at Cloverly Elementary Schoo! between 2000 and 2016. As I previously shared, Mr. Vigna was placed on administrative leave last school year after we were made aware of the initial allegations. Montgomery County Publie Schools (MCPS) has been fully cooperating with MCPD and the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office on this matter. To the extent allowed under the memorandum of understanding with MCPD and MCPS policies and regulations, I have shared information with members of the community. I remain deeply troubled by the allegations regarding Mr, Vigna, The behavior that he is accused of is reprehensible and does not conform to the values of MCPS. As always, we are committed to the well-being of all our students. A. support team of school psychologists, counselors and pupil personnel workers from MCPS will join with our staff on Friday, November 18, and will be available, as needed, to provide counseling and support to students, In addition, information will be provided to school staff, which includes guidance on how to best support students in the classroom, ‘To further support our community, Cloverly will be hosting a community meeting for parents on Monday, November 21 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Representatives from MCPD and MCPS will be present, Ensuring a safe learning environment for our students is a top priority.
