TUBERCULOSIS

I. Definition
-potentially serious infectious disease that mainly affects your lungs
II. Causative Agent
-Mycobactrium tuberculosis
III. Mode of Transmission
-Airborne/droplet nuclei
IV. Signs and Symptoms
-coughing > 3 weeks (may have blood), chest pains, weakness, weight loss, fever,
chills, loss of appetite and night sweats
V. Treatment
A. Category 1
i. New TB patients whose sputum is (+)
1. Intensive Phase
a) R-I-P-E daily for 2 mo.
2. Maintenance Phase
a) R-I daily for 4 mo.
B. Category 2
i. Relapses, failures
1. Intensive Phase
a) R-I-P-E-S daily for 2 mo.
b) R-P-E-S daily for 2 mo.
2. Maintenance Phase
a) R-I-E on the 5th mo.
b) Add P if > 50kgs
C. Category 3
i. TB patients whose sputum is smear (-) for 3x and CXR result of PTB is
minimal
1. Intensive Phase
a) R-I-P daily for 2 mo.
2. Maintenance Phase
a) R-I daily for 4 mo.
b) Add P if > 50kgs
*Side Effects
-Rifampicin: Red to Orange colored secretion and excretion
-Isoniazid:
-Pyrazinamide:
-Ethambutol:

-Streptomycin:
VI. Prevention
A. Stay Home
B. Ventilate the room
C. Cover your mouth
D. Wear a mask
E. Finish entire course of medication
