Action

Binds with stereospecific receptors at many sites within the CNS, increases pain threshold, alters pain reception, inhibits
ascending pain pathways. Fentanyl binds to brain receptors, relieving pain. It decreases the feeling of pain and a person's
response to pain
Premedication: 50100 mcg IM 3060 min before surgery.
Adjunct to general anesthesia: Initial dosage is 2 mcg/kg. Maintenance dose, 220 mcg IV or IM when changes in vital
signs indicate surgical stress or lightening of analgesia.

Dosage

With oxygen for anesthesia: Total high dose is 2050 mcg/kg IV.
Adjunct to regional anesthesia: 500100 mcg IM or slowly IV over 12 min.
Postoperatively: 50100 mcg IM for the control of pain, tachypnea, or emergence delirium; repeat in 12 hr if needed.

used for sedation, relief of pain, preoperative medication, adjunct to general or regional anesthesia, management of
chronic pain (transdermal product)

Side Effects

Abdominal Pain, Bradycardia , Heart Diseases, Tremor

Adverse Effects

Nausea, vomiting; bradycardia, oedema, CNS depression, confusion, dizziness,drowsiness, headache, sedation, transient
hypotension, peripheral vasodilation; increased intracranial pressure. High IV dose may cause chest wall rigidity.
Transdermal: Rash, erythema and itching.
Potentially Fatal: Respiratory depression, trunk rigidity, laryngospasm, bronchoconstriction.
