Programs for Exceptional Children (EC) is pleased to share our Mission and Vision for
the next phase of work in addressing the needs of our students with disabilities. EC
teachers, staff and our central office team collaborated to develop a meaningful
mission and vision that could inform and define our work.
Our vision: Programs for Exceptional Children positively impact academic and social
outcomes for students with disabilities so they can be productive citizens.
Our mission: Programs for Exceptional Children promote success for students with
disabilities, their families, staff and communities to achieve positive post-secondary
outcomes.

Dance Concert

As part of our work to actualize this mission and vision for our students, a survey will be
sent to families or guardians for students with disabilities. Surveys will be sent through
an EC database that has parent email addresses.

From Winter Break

The purpose of the survey will be to hear from parents and guardians about their
experiences in our schools. In this survey, individual schools or principals will not be
identified. Our goal is to look for trends in the survey data that will assist the EC team
in supporting our schools. It will also inform the direction of parent focus groups that
we will be holding this year.
The feedback that we receive will help us determine our next steps and assist our team
in providing targeted support to schools.

Student Safety
To ensure the safety and security of all students, each child must be picked up daily no later than 4:45 p.m.,
unless they are with an assigned staff member for a pre-arranged activity or tutoring. Students should not be
dropped off prior to 8:45 a.m. During this time, staff members are on campus and are assigned to various
locations to supervise students. With the cold weather upon us, I am asking that you please be mindful of the
pickup and drop off times. As a reminder, students are not allowed to stay after school to attend after school
events. Students must go home and return with an adult in order to attend.

CMS Severe Weather Procedures

The safety of all children and staff members is the first concern of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools when making
decisions about closing school or dismissing early. In light of current weather reports and the possibility of severe
weather, CMS is asking families to partner with the district if a decision is made to close school or dismiss early.
The following guidelines are followed by the district in making decisions related to the closing of school:
Two Hour Delay Option
This year, CMS has the option of operating with a two-hour delay. The two-hour delay is a transportation option
that affects bus drivers and students. Schools will open two hours late; the ending bell schedules do not change.
All employees except bus drivers will report to work at the usual time. Each principal will develop a modified bell
schedule that begins two hours later than normal and ends at the regularly-scheduled time. Principals will also
work with the cafeteria manager to develop a modified lunch schedule to accommodate all students. CMS
encourages families to begin making plans and adjustments for the potential two-hour delay.
The CMS Communications Department will notify the public when severe weather requires that schools close or
open with a two-hour delay. No notification means schools are open. On days with closings or delays,
information will be shared by 5:30 a.m. If an early dismissal is required because of severe weather, the
information will be available by 1 p.m. Severe weather changes will be posted on the CMS Web site and intranet
and shared with local newspapers, television and radio stations. The Communications staff will also send voice
and text messages using Connect-Ed, post the information on the CMS Facebook page and notify CharMeck 311.
CMS also asks families to make sure schools have current contact information.
Severe weather in the evening/night
If weather becomes bad during the night, the roads will be monitored by district school security and
transportation officials. A decision will be made by 5 a.m. regarding the closing of school.
The CMS Communications Department will contact local media by 5:30 a.m. regarding school closing.
Families are asked to refer to local media (radio, TV and newspaper) as well as the CMS web site.
Severe weather during the school day
If severe weather begins during the school day, a decision may be made regarding early dismissal. School
officials will monitor the weather throughout the day to ensure student safety. Schools will not dismiss
prior to 11:30 a.m. in order for buses to refuel following the morning routes. Bus routes will run in the
same order as normally followed in the afternoon. Depending on conditions, arrival times at home may
vary.

CMS Severe Weather Procedures continued

All after school activities (athletic events, PTA meetings and tutorials) would be cancelled. The CMS After
School Enrichment Program (ASEP) would not be in operation as well. Parents with children in ASEP
should make plans to pick their children up from the school they attend or notify the school that their
child should ride the afternoon bus they are assigned to.
Families are asked to consider the following tips in preparing for severe weather:
Tune in to local television and radio stations as well as the CMS web site to find out if CMS schools are
closed.
Consider your child care options if school is closed for the full day.
Consider your arrangements if school dismisses early (talk with a neighbor about checking in on your
child, make plans to have an adult in the home after dismissal or ensure that your child has a key to get in
the house).
Talk with your childs daycare provider regarding their severe weather policy.
If you plan to pick your child up from school, make sure the school is notified in advance.
Make sure you have proper identification to pick up your child.
Normal school procedures must be followed in picking up children from school.
CMS employees are reminded to refer to the CMS web site for information on school closings and severe
weather procedures.

PTSA Raven Tree

The Raven Tree is up, please stop by the school main office and take a tag or two! The Raven Tree helps some of
our students that are in need of items to help make their holiday season a happy one! If you can't make it to
school but would like to participate, please email Gretchen Biedrzycki or Mr. Eley and we will gladly help get a
tag to you! If you would like to sponsor a child, we can make arrangements for that as well!

All stars need to be returned by December 16th taped to the unwrapped gift. Thank you in advance for helping
make this a success and remembering the reason for the season!

What a delicious way to support our School!

Good communication between the home and the school is an important part of the educational process. Ridge
Road also has a website - http://pages.cms.k12.nc.us/ridgeroad/. The website contains a calendar of events, staff
lists and email addresses, a PTSA link, and information about extracurricular activities. Each quarter, the grade
level teams send home newsletters to keep you informed of what your child is learning. The PTSA also uploads
newsletters on the website under the PTSA link to keep you fully informed of what is happening. Reminders
about school activities are also emailed to parents. To receive reminders from the principal and PTSA, join the
parent email list on the Ridge Road website.
