Family, Say WHAT?!

Jackys Teachers of Promise

Jacquelin De La Torre, 19, isnt no ordinary student from Arizona

State University. She is a mother, a part-time employee, a TRIO STEM member, and now, a corps member. She wasnt sure what she wants to do after
graduation. Her special talent is writing, but believes she can fulfill more in her
accomplishments.
De La Torre then received an e-mail from her TRIO STEM advisor, Celestina
Rodriguez, which may be the answer to all her questions.
On September 30th, De La Torre was one of the lucky students from every
college to be selected in the AGUILAS Teachers of Promise (ATOP) a twoyear program where she will be co-teaching eighth graders from the Cartwright School District . She believed that not only itll gain her confidence to
speak in front of people or set an example to students, but possibly teach her
son, Victor Giovanni, at a young age.
I want Gio to see more of me than just his mother, De La Torre said. I want
to be his hero. I may be full-handed with school, work, and raising him, but
anything is possible with a little faith and managing my time.
De La Torres next ATOP teaching will be taking place at Estrella Middle
School from 5:00pm to speak with parents about ATOP and the benefits for
their children. Good Luck, Ms. De La Torre!

The celebration took place at Puerto Penasco, Mexico., where parents Susana Gonzalez and Norberto Citalan, both from the marines, raised their daughter.

Before the celebration started, Little Sofias baptism ceremony took place at Nuestra

dressed in an elegant white clothing, honoring themselves with their parents and godparents.

Once the ceremony ended, Sofia, along with the honor of her parents and godparents,

A Word From Our Editor

Having a family is one of the greatest blessings you can ever keep. Since the day you
were born, they manage to stick through all your accomplishments, troubles, sadness, and even holidays. I thought I would lose my family because of my pregnancy,
but because of their support, I was able to push myself further to be much more than
being a mother. If it wasnt for my mom and dad, who know where I be with my child.
For all those who still keep in touch with their families, take the time to thank them
and feel appreciated that theyre still with you.
