Basics of a photovoltaic cell

A pn junction diode forms the most elementary archetype of a PV cell. When energy from photons is
absorbed by the solar cell, electron-hole pairs are formed, which are confined to the n side and p side,
respectively, because of the deple- tion region. A voltage equal to the reduction in barrier potential is
developed at the terminals of a cell, which can appear across an external load leading to cur- rent flow.
