Xenon shod arc larn ps XBO are high pressure discharge lamps for DC operation designed
preferably for use in optical deviaes. The outstanding features of these lamps include

a very high radiant intensity and lumlnance, and a spectral distribution ranging from

a-_

medium-wave u traviolet to short-wave infrared. This conUnuous spectrum results n the

visib e range in a light colour close y resembling natural daylight which is a mixture of
direct sunlight and reflected sky-llght. The spectra energy distribut on remains constant
throuqhout the lamp lrfe and is independent of fluctuations in the mains voltage, and of

The XBO range with its many wattages and versions can be used for a wide variety of
applications.

Lamps of the ozone-free version (OFR) practicaly do not generate any radiation below
250 nm.

XBO lamps for horizontal operation (verstons H, HS, HSC,

HTP), for instance, make

possib ethe constructlon of movie projector lamphouses with very high opticaleff ciency.

Also avaiable are Suprasil lamps the discharge vessel of which consists of Suprasil
quadz. The radiant lntensity of Suprasil larnps in the spectral region below 250 nm is
considerab y higher than that of the other versions.

All XBO lamps offer impodant advantagesl

Technical lnformation
Description
The high uminance and rad ant ntens ty are typ cal for Xenon short arc lamps XBO and
resu t from a high concentration of power. The lamp body consists of quadz to withstand
the hightherma load. The discha rge vessel isof elljpsoidal orspherical shapeandalmost
free of striae and bubbles. The lamp body is filled with Xenon gas. The gas filling has an
over pressure which increases during operation of the amp.
The electrodes are arranged in the dischaTge vesse diametrically opposite to each other.
The different shape of both electrodes is dependent on the DC operation. Because of

the required high temperature (thermal emission), the cathode (negative electrode) must
be kept small, and the anode relatively large in order to allow this high thermal load to
dissipate. Each electrode is fitted on a rod which also acts as a current-carrying connection
with the corresponding base. The current eads of the smalier XBO models up to 150 W
consist of molybdenum foils. The overall length of the lamps is determined by the thermal
ioad and the temperature gradient between e ectrodes and bases. Both ends of the
quarlz glass body of the lamps are fitted wth metal sleeve bases The proped(ies of the
ow wattage lamps XBO 75 W to XBO 250 W limit the current range, so that these lamps
can only be operated with rated current or rated power. The more powedul XBO lamps,
however, have a relatively w de current control range

XBO 75

n order to facilitate its ignition, XBO 75 W/l is fitted with a stading electrode located on
the side of the d scharge vesse (see figure 1 on page 2 wiring diagram on page 6, and

Despite the high concentration of power, a I lamp models described above have been
designed in such a way that forced cooling is not necessary provided suff cient air for
convection cooling ls supplied to the lamp and exhausted from the lamp house.

Taking into cons deratjon their high power consumption, the size of these models is rather
smal . Because of the high therma load, a natural convect on cooling is nsuff cient for
these iamps, and a forced cooling, directed parallel to the lamp axis, is requlred. For the
sake of sufficient cooling of the component parts withn the bases as wel as of the
discharge vessel, the air flow must have a cealain velocity. Both bases of XBO 4000 W
and XBO 6500 W are fitted with guide cups wh ah can be attached according to the chosen

direction of cooling, ejtherfrom top to bottom, or from bottom to top (see figure on page 3).

A sufficient dissipatio,n of heat by the cooling air is g ven when the velocity of

measured at the specific spots perpendicularto the lamp axis is keptw th n a recbmmended
range. XBO 4OO0 W and XBO 6500 W have prefocus pin bases serving as supports,
and connecting cables with cable luqs mounted in lamp axis as current connectors (cab e
ength approx 400 rrm).

These 3 lamp models in shortened version (H horizontal, S shoftened) have a cvlindrica

prefocus pin on the anode base and a threaded ptn (5,/16" 18 UNC 2AJ on the'cathode
base for suppofting the lamp as well as foT current connection. The lamps can be screwed
into their cathode-side suppoft by using the protectrve cover as a tool.

These lamps differ from the above mentioned lS models by a cab e (C : cable) on the
anode base which helps to avoid contact resistances and additiona heating-up of the
anode base.ln addition the mechanical strain and other risks durlng installation;nd electric
connection are reduced.
Both these shortened Iamps have prefocus pin bases as supports. The electrical current
is carried by a cable with cable lugs (cable length approx. 300 and/or 4aO mm) r.tounted

XBO 500 W/H has cylindrical prefocus pins of very close tolerances for current connection

The temperature of the Iamp bases shou d never exceed 230 oC @46 oD. The blower
should be kept runnlng for at least another 5 minutes afterthe lamp has been switched-off
Manufacturers .of equipment are invited to apply for the paper "Guide for the Design of
Equlpment for Xenon High Pressure Lamps XBO" contalnlng further lnformation. L]pon

"lnstructions for Use" packed with each lamp should be strictly followed. ln

must not be removed before the lamp has been installed, and which must be fltted around
the lamp before any work is done in the open lamphouse.

A protective mask and gloves must be worn when doing this iob.
XBO lamps are to be connected to the power supp y accordlng to the design of the bases
and of the current connectinq pafts (see "lnstructions for Use"j.

Pay attention to correct polarity! Reversed polarity will damage the electrocjes wjthin

Burning Position

$:i#si*it""#r#ir$-"rtr*'*:iil:::#F$','#iltii:j":ilr"U,Jr"x!i:i:il:
ln vedical burning position, the anode (blg electrode) is on top. When the lamp s operated
in an incllned burn ng position, the convective gas stream fol ows the law of gravi\,,, which
results in a def ection of the arc from the electrode axis, as well as in an uneven heating-up
and b ackening of the d scharge vessel For these reasons, the permissib e operating
position is limited (see flgures on page 2 and 4). XBO 75 W/l and XBO 75 W2 may be

operated in a more inclined posiUon and do not require extra equipment for stabilizing
the arc in the lamp axis. The star|ng electrode of XBO 75 W1 must not be located over
the urninous arc when the arnp is operated n incl ned burning posiUon. When a very
good arc stability is required for XBO 150 WS and XBO 150 W/GS, it is recommended
to operate these lamps in a vefiical burnung position on y.
Lamps wjth the index letters H, HS, HSC, and HTP may be operated in veftical as wel as

in horizontal burning position. Durng horizonta operation of H and HTP models, the
deflection of the arc caused by the convective gas stream (for "arc stabilization", see
table) must be compensated by a magnetic fleld. To generaie this magnetic field, the
current connector or a permanent magnet may be used.

Wiring

The most important wirlng diagrams for XBO lamps are shown on page 6.

Power Supplies

These incude all devces supplying direct current, such as rectif ers, DC generators,
conveders, batteries and gniters wh ic h produ ce the high frequency high vo tage requ ired

Direct Current Devices

ln order to produce ihe um nous arc, a hlgh direct voltage is requ red at the moment
of starting. This supply voltage can be furnished by a rectlfier or a converter in dling
condition, prov ded however, that the voltage drops to the lower operating voltage of
the XBO lamp rnmed ately after ignition. lf a rectlfier or a battery has a lower no load voltage,

the possibilib/ exists at the moment of starting the lamp to superirnpose a higher direct

an ohmlc resistor s used for current stabilzation and current control, lt should be
nserted in the lead of the uneadhed pole.

The pos t ve lead must be connected to the anode base (big electrode).

Performance and ife of XBO lamps are essentially affected by the electrical current
supply.

Please note; A guarantee for the lamps can be given only when auxiliary equipment
is used which meets the requirements established by the lamp manufacturer.

lgnition Devices

For the approval of ignition devices, it is necessary that a device be tested. The presentation

of documentation is not sufficlent n th s case.

The electrical y lnsulating gas between the e ectrodes is ionized by the igniter. For the
sake of safe operation, it s advisab e to design the gnition device for high frequency
hiqh voltacle.

Various verslons of ignition devices, adapted to the many amp wattages, are offered
by the e ectrotechnical industry
A I XBO lamp models may be stafted with igniters designed for higher wattages.

When operated horizontaly, the evaporated e ectrode material will deposit ma nly n the
upper part of the discharge vesse. The average llfe data stated for horizontal operation,
therefore, wi I be met only when the arnps are turned 1B0o on the r axis after reaching
their rated ha f llfe. After turning, the lower less blackened part of the discharge vessel
shou d point upwards To facllitate this task, the lamp packages contain flat washers to
be attached to the threaded pin on the cathode side.

Operation

The maximum current for each lamp mode as stated in the table must never be exceeded

considerably reduced. Operation with a current beow the current control range as

tables.
The values of the ight intensib/ as shown in the table refer to the entire arc and, consequently, are higher than the light intensity resulting frorn the lumrnance and the reference
area. The approximate corre ation of light intensity and amp current can be defined as
follows: l-J". ( : light intensib/, J : lamp current, n : 1.5).

The reference area for denermin ng the llght intensib/, in order to establsh the average
brightness for each iamp mode, consists of a rectangular section of the arc formed by
the height h (electrode spacing of a amp in operation) and the luminance halfwidth w
of the arc. The values w x h of the luminous area ar given in the tables on pages 2-5.

Wf'en tfre XSO 450 W to XBO 6500 W lamps are initiaily operated with the rated currents
stated in the table, the decrease of uminous f ux during the life of the lamp can be
compensated eniire y by gradually increasing the current up to the maxirnum values.
ln case the lamps are operated with a constant current, the decrease of luminous flux
at the end of the average amp ife will amount to 25-30%, depending on the operating
current.
